How to write hiragana, katakana or kanji with western PC:s?

I'm just wondering how to make it. I've installed support for Japanese characters to my computer, but what I need to write them?

In WindowsXP, you can install the Japanese input locale. You then switch to it from the toolbar and type in romanjii. This is then automaticaly converted to hiragana/kanji. You can disable the Kanji conversion from said toolbar, and also switch between katakana and hiragana.
