the reason why my bye bye thread was closed

is just plain ridiculous imo ok i'm not a mod or admin (thank god) but i really gotta say that's one of the current problems... before the mods or admins talk to the peeps about the thing they close it and you got no chance to say anyhting about it and later on in another thread you stumble over the same situation and wanna talk about it and then the thread gets closed again... i don't say it's like that all the time but i made this experience and if you are good mods and you give a little **** about what members of your forums think about your decisions then you should really argue with them instead of closing the thread... anyways i go to town now... this means i'll be back in a couple of hours i bet 50 cent that this thread will be closed by the time i'm back

Ya, I really dont think the thread shoulda been closed. I do "think" the mods shoulda edited the conversation and or/deleted offensive argumentitive posts.

To me this is more effective than deleting the thread.

Threads related on closed threads always get closed quickly

Have to agree to both suggestions.
But chances are that this one will be closed soon enough.

Re: the reason why my bye bye thread was closed

Okay, I am not going to close this one if the conversation was carried out in civalised manner. I usually warn the person/people before closure. Betamax closed the previous one becuase the discussion went too far and out of control, that was his discision and I respect it. as long as you people keep it cool and on topic, then the thread wont be closed

Yours,
-Elly

Re: the reason why my bye bye thread was closed

Ok guys, as a moderator myself at another popular board I gotta speak 3 simple words:

Suck it up

Moderators have though jobs. When they see a thread that don't belong on their forum, they delete it; when they see a thread that may hold some value for other readers but is getting out of hand, they close it.

Don't like it or disagree, there’s a little image at the bottom of their close message called "sendpm.gif" and it reads "pm"; ya know what you do, click it!

Then talk to them and try to solve the problem with the thread. Just because a mod or an admin closed a thread doesn't mean they can't re-open it if there is just-cause.

Having whining threads like this don't solve jack-all, it just creates more spam.

Re: the reason why my bye bye thread was closed

yah...but I was just a bit offended by the post against killjoy since when someone says he wonders why a person is not banned yet,and that person happens to be someone I understand, then I sometimes overreact...

edit:was meant at recca...and person who posted above me,as I said before,to you this might be pure spam...but it isnt for me,so.....feck off (again dont mean anything offensively)

Re: the reason why my bye bye thread was closed

i personally stand by beta's decision, the conversation was getting way too heated, and the topic was already skeptical

Re: the reason why my bye bye thread was closed

No it doesn't.
It only wants an answer to why a thread that really didn't need closing was closed.

It becomes spam when lamers come with invalid posts

>yah...but I was just a bit offended by the post against killjoy since when someone says he wonders why a person is not banned yet,and that person happens to be someone I understand, then I sometimes overreact...

I was at the heat of the moment.
Didn't really mean it like that. It's only the fact that his joke had no meaning for the thread so i overreacted alittle

So why not give a warning instead of just closing.
You are admins and have the power to make statements.
If you don't use what you have, people will lose respect for your position.

Re: the reason why my bye bye thread was closed

the thread was closed because of a thing called judgement, in law there is a subsection called common law, its based on past decisisions and common sense, dont tell me you didnt see that thread getting out of control

do people need a warning before attempting to commit a crime? its not like youre little 10 year old kids, a brick would have been smart enough to tell that the topic wasnt going anywhere good

I'm closing this. If you have issues about why Beta closed that thread, talk to him directly. As Malcom said, that's what PMs are there for.

Re: the reason why my bye bye thread was closed

Well now, seeing how this thread is essentually directed at me, I feel that a statement is probably required. However, as Malcom mentioned, if you have issues with any action taken by an admin it is best to contact them directly, outlining your point calmly and intelligently. Creating a new thread, swearing at us in that thread and then proceeding to try to continue the agrument only helps prove to me that my decision was the correct one in the first instance.

Anyways, taking each points as mentioned:

before the mods or admins talk to the peeps about the thing they close it and you got no chance to say anyhting about it and later on in another thread you stumble over the same situation and wanna talk about it and then the thread gets closed again...

This is what we call moderation. Anything we deem inappropiate has to be delt with. If the thread is recreated we deal with it again. Why would we not? Everyone who does something inappropriate gets treated the same. It does not matter if the member has got 1 or 1,000 posts. I will not treat anyone with double standards. As for comebacks I have already mentioned PM's, so I am afraid you are mistaken in that point.

i don't say it's like that all the time but i made this experience and if you are good mods and you give a little **** about what members of your forums think about your decisions then you should really argue with them instead of closing the thread...

Well I don't understand what you mean by "you made this experience" so I will skip that. As regarding your comment about thinking about the site members you are quite correct. We have to think about what is best for them and the site in general. Sometimes that requires actions that may offend some ppl, as is in this case. That thread had a dubious reason for existing in the first place, furthermore it has started to decend into an argument from which both sides were only becoming more intrenched in their views. The logical decision is to close it before it becomes even more destructive.

anyways i go to town now... this means i'll be back in a couple of hours i bet 50 cent that this thread will be closed by the time i'm back

Hmm it appears that we owe you 50 cents then . But the point has to be made... if you were so sure that this thread would be closed, why did you create it in the first place? Obviously you were aware that it would be against the rules, so why do it? It only helps to weaken your case in my eyes.

I am not going to reopen this thread, however please feel free to PM me if you have comments.

Ya, I really dont think the thread shoulda been closed. I do "think" the mods shoulda edited the conversation and or/deleted offensive argumentitive posts.

To me this is more effective than deleting the thread.

Well I didn't delete it, but that's a moot point . Anyways it's a nice idea, one I actually did try in the past. The problem is that ultimately it proves unworkable. If ppl think they can get away with something, even if it's for a second, they will just keep on arguing regardless. The only was to deal with this from my own experience is to kill it, preferably before it gets out of control.

No it doesn't.
It only wants an answer to why a thread that really didn't need closing was closed.

It becomes spam when lamers come with invalid posts

Well IMHO it did warrant closing, but again that is moot. As to invalid posts it did actually go off-topic, but that is not the reason why I closed it.

I was at the heat of the moment.
Didn't really mean it like that. It's only the fact that his joke had no meaning for the thread so i overreacted alittle

Which is the primary reason why I shut it. Both views were reaching boiling point. IMHO had no action been taken, it would have undouptably accelerated into a flame war.

So why not give a warning instead of just closing.
You are admins and have the power to make statements.
If you don't use what you have, people will lose respect for your position.

Quite simply becuase in my opinion in this instance a warning simply would not have worked. Unfortunately, though unavoidable, we were precieved as having one viewpoint in this arguement. Hence in my eyes a warning would just have been ignored. Thus the best course of action was to close it and I stand by that decision.

As to the issue of respect, well you can never please everyone. One of the perks of the job.
