I've been using it for a few weeks, and have noticed no interference with my computer's performance whatsoever, even while playing rather resource-intensive games such as UT2k3 or Medieval TW. So go get it, you have no excuse!!

Re: Volunteer your PC
I use folding@home; same design different project (understanding the folding mechanisms of proteins...an important part of bio research today)

Re: Volunteer your PC
Im the same as alguna chica, I've ran folding@home for nearly a year now and I think it/or any of these similar projects are a worthwile cause that everyone should install.
You can set it up as a service so it runs in the background and you wont even notice its running as it only uses unused cpu cycles so theres no excuse for not installing it. Kid A's cause is just as valid as the folding@home one I use as any of these causes are a good thing and everyone should help them as they could bring benefits for all. If anyone decides to install folding@home, why not join a team, I fold under team #93 (short-media) and they would be glad to have you and if you want to help my points total also join as my user name OneJaz (you get points for each work unit you complete)Theres plenty of info on the team I fold for here as well as faq's to do with everything you need to know about running f@h. I dont want to steal Kid A's thread and as I said his cause is as valid as mine and I'll just be glad if anyone runs either of our recommended clients

Re: Volunteer your PC
Hijackers!! :P
Just kidding. The purpose of the thread was to inform people that they can help scientific research by doing nothing (well apart from installing the proggie). In the end, it'll be beneficial for all of us either way. |

Re: Volunteer your PC
Come on no ones replied to this thread all day
I know loads of you have these uber overclocked computers well why not use some of that amazing processing power to help hopefully save peoples lives, the only other way this research can be done is for the researchers to pay to use huge multi million $$ computers and the cost prevents them from using them as much as they want so dont come on here bragging about your P4@4ghz or your xp1700@2400mhz unless you put that power to a good use!!! Seriouslly install it and forget about it thats all you have to do, think your o/c is stable? well run it 24/7 @ 100% cpu usage to find out (allthough you can limit the prog to use anything between 1% to 100% of your free cpu cycles)

Re: Volunteer your PC
I use folding@home....I have been for a while. I wanted to start an NGemu team for folding@home, but it didn't quite work.

Re: Volunteer your PC
Yeah Mad you can. The program doesn't require a fast (or constant) internet connection to run. It just downloads the each project you work on and then sends its network the results. In another note: "Slow" computers actually have a good amount of idle cpu power to contribute too...and most of these programs add weight to the work slower computers do so that way, in terms of a points system, it shows that slower computers put in as much work as the faster ones (in terms of hours, not what was acomplished)
