To be honest, it doesn't sound like a bad idea for a rental service. But I wonder if the cost of those special discs won't make the whole thing too expensive.

Greetings,

I've heard about this some time ago... It's a stupid idea from a stupid (and money-hungry) industry.

Live long and prosper.

Well that's my primary arguement concerning this. Basically in the current setup, rental companies buy in X amount of disks. They only need so many disks, because they can be reused. However under the new system they would need a disk per customer. This would most certainly cost them more than the current setup, and ultimately the cost would have to be passed onto the customer.

I'd say they are seriously stupid. There are millions of ways out there that can easily counter this move.

This is almost as stupid as when Chaiman Mao suggested that under a communist system seeds can be planted closer together as plants will co-operate, rather than compete as under the capitalist system.
As Badaro and Beta suggested, the outlay will far outweigh the benefits accorded to a reduction in theft.

What? Eh? Did you actualy read the thread? Regardless, MI2 is an excellent thoughtless action film.

I assume that the point is to alliviate the problem of theft of discs.

>The discs stop working when a process similar to rusting makes them unreadable. The discs start off red, but when they are taken out of the package, exposure to oxygen turns the coating black and makes it impenetrable by a DVD laser.

That is ridiculous, if rust can be removed, and other 'foolproof' coatings have been removed, then so can THiS stupid coating. plus, if you can still apparently copy it within the first 2 days of use it is useless even if it does work properly

i don't think so. i'm fairly sure the point of EZ-D is to be able to offer low cost movies to the consumer at any retail location. not too many people will buy a $30 DVD while waiting in line at the grocery store, but disney is banking on the possibility that people WILL buy a $6 EZ-D in a situation like that (and to say the obvious, most grocery stores/ice cream parlours/garden supply depots/restaurants/warehouses/auto dealers/etc, don't have or want to offer rental services).

the retail possibilities of EZ-D are limitless (not that anyone will actually buy them, i'm just saying, they can be sold almost anywhere) - they are a marketing dream. fast food restaurants like macdonald's and burger king already have signed endorsement contracts with hollywood studios - perhaps the happy meal toy of macdonald's fame will be replaced by the happy meal EZ-D, etc.

i might be wrong here, but that's what i think is the implied motive. and it does seem sort of logical, if you operate under the assumption that anyone would be stupid enough to buy an EZ-D.

OMG, that article sounds like a joke. I can't believe that it is actually something Sony is making. I can't believe what the one guy said too, "It may burn down your home but that's a small price to pay to combat piracy." It's not like they don't already have billions of dollars. Sony is asking for a lawsuit with this DVD player.

yup, certainly the cost of developing such discs would cost the customer...
