Hey guys, I was wonderin if theres any program that lets you see what codec a *.avi file is encoded with?
Also what other kinds of codec are avaliable besides the DivX

There's one called Nimo Codec pack that contains different video and audio decoders imagined.

You can get it at DivX Digest.

But becareful, some of the decorders in the Nimo Codec Pack, maybe older than the current one you have.

There's also a video codec called XviD Codec which I have encountered from fansubs.

Well in Windows XP, if you go to the properties of a file, it normally tells you in the summary, like this (This one is DivX 3. DivX 5 is identified as DivX5 and some other DivX3 movies are identified as something like MSmp4)

The only other .avi codecs that I can think of are the un-compressed format, Xvid and I think there are some others but I can't remember them off the top of my head.

VirtualDub is good for pretty much anything you need to do with an AVI:

While Nimo can be useful sometimes, I would strongly warn against it. First of all the DivX that's bundled with it is the one including spyware/adware. Also it can cause weird errors occasionally and muck things up.

As for finding what codec something is encoding in, if you have the codec, simply displaying the properties will show it, however, if you DON'T have the codec it'll probably just say "Unknown" which obviously doesn't help you at all.

Besides DivX, I suggest downloading XviD, and VobSub, and most of all ffdshow. With these you can basically play any file.

Use avic100 from www.inmatrix.com, it will tell you which divx codec is using the video you are trying to check. Just be aware of not to change the header unless you really want.

For ffdshow, see jegHegy's link or go to http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow. I recommend the ffdshow-20021213.exe package. For the other tools, check http://doom9.org.

I've had no probs with ffdshow. It's fast AND good image quality. It has a very extensive menu, much moreso than DivX, so if you wanna change stuff like image quality and postprocessing, you can do that.
