what is macrovision on dvd players?

I think its just some sort of built in copy protection to stop you playing disks from other regions and/or a system that stops you plugging it into your video and recording the dvd (think it scrambles the screen)
Im not 100% sure but i think thats the idea, your best bet is to just search on google if you want a definitave answer.
