A moral dilemma I faced today (and a totally crap day in general)
A few hours ago, I decided that it was time for me to have a haircut, so I hopped into my car and went in the direction of my local barber. But a short while after I drove off, I though, "ah hell, why not pamper myself at least once this year?", so instead of going to the barber I headed to the direction of a local beauty parlor catering to both men and women. While I was waiting alone in their parlor for my turn, I noticed a little black case in a corner of the sofa. Seeing as there was no one around for me to ascertain its ownership, I went over to that corner, picked up the case and opened it, Inside was a Nokia 6310, a mobile phone with GPRS and Bluetooth capabilities, as well as having a pretty neat design as well as pricetag. Though I was shocked and excited by my discovery, I stopped for a moment and wondered if I should notify the management and surrender the phone to them, or I practice the ageless tradition of "finders keepers". I decided to return it. Now this was not an easy decision to make, as the phone was very pretty to begin with, and my own mobile phone, a Nokia 5110, was already cracked in four places and was malfuctioning often. Still, I thought it was for the best move for me to return it, as it wasn't mine to begin with, and I knew how it is to lose something expensive like that, having lost a Palm m105 before. So anyway, when my turn was announced, I first went to the front desk to surrender the mobile phone I found lying in a corner of the sofa. The receptionist took it wothout a word, and I went on to get my haircut and massage. After a few minutes, a thirtysomething guy barges in the salon with the receptionist to whom I surrendered the phone. I thought they were going to thank me for returning it, but I guess you could just imagine the surprise and shock I felt when the homo guy (I knew he was *** by the sound of his voice) shouting a ton of invectives at me, cursing my parents to the high heavens and announcing to everyone that I was a thief! After about a full minute of insults raining upon me, he/she went out in a raging huff, still streaming curses as the he/she person went out of the salon. I sat there, stunned by the events that had happened a minute ago. All the people in the salon were looking at me with contempt in their eys, uncomfortable that a "thief" was in their midst. The hairstylist continued on to his duty after a while, but I was burning to get my butt out of there in shame to the point that I didn't bother going for the massage anymore. Driving home after my haircut, I was still shaken by that incident, forcing me to pull aside to stop and relax. Raging fear was inside me to find that F***ing faggit and beat the living crap out of him. I certainly deserved thanks for returning his phone, but instead of thanks I got humiliation. After I calmed down long enough for me to stop shaking I drove on home, and up to this point I haven't told my parents about the incident, and I doubt I ever will. Just told this to you guys to prove that not all good deeds have a happy ending. Right now I wish I just took the damned phone and gone on quietly as if nothing had happened. Had I done that, I would've gotten a nice haircut, a relaxing massage and a nice, shiny new phone to boot. Sigh. When will the breaks go my way? First I lost my girlfriend, now this... I wish 2002 would just hurry up and end as soon as possible. It's been quite a bad year for me.

Shiori , dont feel ashamed,...instead you should be proud that you have done the right desicion. If you got that phone and walked away, you wont feel conforatble either, coz you took something that doesnt belong to you however, despite that guy was an idiot, i would stand in front of his face and defend myself. It was HIS fault to leave such a precious thing lying on the corner. If he cant be responsible, thats HIS problem. and if you didnt took his phone, someone else will. Cheer up Shiori , you did the right thing and belive me, it doesnt matter what people think of you. what matters is what YOU think of yourself

Did you confront the receptionist later on? He/She could have been the firestarter, having misunderstood something. Given your situation, I'd probably be stunned as well but if I happen to be not, I'd yell back at him..and probably start a fight. I get out of control when someone curses my parents. In anycase, keeping what belongings I found isnt one of my strong points. What if its jinxed? ![]() Anyway, good day to you Shiori. |

The receptionist told the faggit that I was the one who returned it, but he said the same things all the same. Anyway, I think I just need to sleep now, it's been a long day. What are you doing up so late anyway, Hanamichi? Thanks for the encouragement and whatnot, but right now I still wish I took it anyway. Maybe that was the "break" I was waiting for all along...

damn that guy deserves to be shot, if it helps taking the phone woulda caused even more problems. I don't suppose it would be possible to sue the a**hole for verbal assault in a public display after doing a good deed

Damn that sure sucks. Doing the right thing by returning the phone and then being yelled at. Well don't take it hard on you. It's no use saying now that it was better to yell back at him and make him say that he was reallt really sorry. Next time remove the sim card from the phone and then return it. If they thank you give the sim card back

Which beuaty parlor is this again? I'll get my Filipino posse to hang out there and teach that guy a lesson j/kI know that must suck, but think of it this way. You gained some karma points for doing a good deed, he loses some karma points for his actions. What comes around, goes around, he'll suffer the consequences of his actions sooner or later

Shiori, the guy is simply a prick. I would wait for him to come back, and then beat the crap out of him, or lift his phone for good, slash his tires, etc. I guess it's like Murphy's Law... "A good deed never goes unpunished." But what would you have done with the phone anyway? Wouldn't the guy know you had it when he dialed his own number? |

Well you could have probably changed the sim card for your own, assuming that the phone wasn't locked onto a different network. Although that said it wouldn't be worth it as each phone has its own IMEI no., so if your phone gets nicked/lost the network can send a kill signal to it making it about as useless as carrying a brick in your pocket.

That’s gratitude for you. That is what you get for being nice! Shiori you did nothing wrong. There a lot of @ssholes in this world. Though it makes you think twice whether or not to touch the phone in the first place. |
