First off, don't ever compare Harry Potter to LOTR. HP can't hold a candle to LOTR. Second, yes there are similarities. Just goes to show that Rowling ripped off some ideas from Prof. Tolkien.

I wouldnt say that wormtounge fits that description really, he was more manipulitive than michievious.

LOTR - The heroes have been attacked by a big troll.
Harry Potter - The heroes have been attacked by a big troll.
This is only in the film, and its only implied that theres a cave troll (or more than one) outside the room in the book, the only thing that could be the troll is when the orcs first try to get into the chamber that the company is in a huge arm and foot pushes through the door but after frodo hits it with his sword it retreats.
Its an orc that pins Frodo with a spear not a troll like in the film.

LOTR - A big spider has attacked Frodo in the forest.
Harry Potter - A big spider has attacked Harry in the forest.
Again this is not correct, Frodo is attacked by a giant spider (shelob) but its in the mountain pass..

Er I think you'll find that's the point the author was trying to convey

Jaz is right but Bilbo was attacked by giant spiders in The Hobbit (which I think were the offspring of Shelob).

Simple fact is that LOTR is so influential that if you look hard enough just about any fantasy/sci-fi movie, game or series will have at least some similarities. Albeit not quite as obvious, or cheesy.

Ahhh the name is Bilbo... I thought it was... you don't want to know.
I'm sure you can guess what I thought it was.

wasnt lothlorien just a city of the elves, there were woods around it but lothlorien was the city of the lady galadriel, the scary forest in lotr would be mirkwood imo

I'd certainly hope not. I'd never read again. Where does it say everything draws from LotR? A LOT of series have absolutely NOTHING to do with it. On the other hand, HP DEFINITELY takes more than a few things from LotR.

You mean FotR. The full trilogy isn't out yet. And, imho, it's very good. Best live-action movie out there. On the other end of the spectrum, some people think it's incredibly boring.

The book is sooooooooooooooo much worse. I did like the book more when I read it the first time when I was ten, however. And the fact some of the best parts of the book aren't in the movie isn't a good thing.

I think the book version(lotr) is alot better, on the other hand, the movie was alot easier to understand.

In the Fellowship of the Ring, there is a tree called Old Man Willow who attempts to kill Pippin and Merry.
In Harry Potter, there is a tree called The Weeping Willow, who attempts to kill Harry 'n Ron.
