The select button on controllers reminds me of the Tab button on keyboards.
People are too spoiler by the mouse and visual interfaces. How do you think we switched between menus on text based interfaces!!

Jokes aside, it is normally the user choice for identation when programming and in text based databases and data files. And <ALT>-TAB

You never use alt+tab to switch between windows?
And tab is also used to switch between text windows.

Tab has a lot more uses than the select button

Oh, I know. It was just that all the talk about keys on a keyboard reminded me of my hate of the Insert and I felt I had to share.

I use the "Select" / "back" button for inserting coins into emulators!

The pause/break key has its uses in console manipulation, I remember it being used when interfacing with Cisco equipment, but I have never managed to decipher what's the heck the scroll block key is used for.

Tab is often the map key in games. A useful thing to have the map button so close to the wasd keys instead of somewhere like the 'm' button, where you have to move your hand off wasd or at least look down at the keyboard to press it.

If your running on professional applications, tab IS A MUST have. For my work, we use proprietary software that relies heavily on it. In the right scenarios, tab is 500% faster then a mouse when filling in multiple fields .

In another scenario, tab(+alt) is 500% faster then a mouse at minimizing out of a session of team fortress when the boss walks by. Professionals live and by that key.

I've actually used the Pause/break key a few times. When the BIOS starts up really fast but theres a message in it you want to read it becomes useful.
