Hey, out of everyone in this little argument, who's the only one to have actually explored all downloading options?

I've tried a usenet trial before, didn't find anything special enough to justify spending money every month.

Then you were using the wrong one or all of either indexing sites, usenet servers, or clients

I've got lots of friends with Rooters Switches heck the hole set and non of them ever had problems, as for private trackers i for one like them after all i can get up to 10MB (though usually 3-5MB) on them (romanian trackers only though):P.

I don't, but I also don't go around complaining about BT protocol when I myself am at fault.

Classical case of "PEBKAC"

And yet you don't see the technical superiority of Usenet.

* No issues with networking
* No need to seed
* Security

You could do those for free if you:
* Have access to SSL encrypted IRC and access to a pre DB
* Have access to IRC bouncers also for security
* Have access to SSL encrypted FTP
* Have the right connections

With that combo, I consistantly max out my connection, and get every single thing I need well before it even appears on Usenet's alt.bin.* newsgroups.

It isn't rocket science.....

Whats wring with having to upload when your upload slot is idle 99.8 percent of the time anyway? Public trackers do not need a high seeding ratio at all (the only thing preventing you from not uploading anything at all is the restriction on the client, but even that is by-passable if you use a client like BitThief, though it is unethical)

PeerGuardian. Tricky to configure I have heard, but very effective once your settings are fine-tuned. I don't bother with it though, I'm not paranoid about security

Well that seems like a lot of effort to get a few free 0s and 1s.

It could mean the difference between a criminal act and working within the boundaries of the law? Not in all countries of course, but where I live and in other countries it's legal to make a personal copy of books, audio and video for personal use and education. However, publishing these goods without permission of the owner is not allowed, so that makes using torrents illegal, while using usenet is the legal alternative.

You complain about BitThief being unethical while it is mostly used for illegally distributing the work others have put lots of time, effort and money into for free? Oh, the irony

In the USA, "Digital Media" is allowed one backup for archival purposes. In modern times, the term "archive" corresponds with the term "Backing up" ...

In the United States of America a backup is only allowed if you don't circumvent copy protection though.

I wonder if the software companies would ever prosecute businesses that back up their systems? After all, it's illegal to back up more than one copy, yet many businesses back up their data daily, and does that mean setting backups of your hard drive regularly mean you're violating copyright?

The massive amount of benefits outweigh the minor hassles.

Listen: why upload at all?

BitThief, unethical?
Isn't that the pot calling the kettle black?

if(not a sarcasm)
Most people and companies only backup care to backup the data partition of their information rather than the application partition, so there's no problem in that respect.
else
