AMD - new change in leadership over financial woes

AMD chief stepping down

It seems Hector Ruiz, AMD's chief executive officer was pushed aside over the company's financial troubles (I guess this is what happens when the company you lead makes seven consecutive quarterly losses). Some highlights from the article:

Quote:
The executive changeover came as AMD reported that it lost $1.19-billion (U.S.) in the second quarter, worse than the $600-million it lost in the same period a year ago. Taking one-time events into account, AMD's adjusted loss totalled 60 cents per share, below the 52 cents expected by analysts polled by Thomson Financial.

AMD's revenue rose to $1.35-billion from $1.31-billion, but it was short of the $1.45-billion in revenue expected on Wall Street.
I think a large part of this had to do with AMD's questionable and very costly acquisition of ATI. Of course stiff competition from Intel didn't help matters.

Frankly, I thought AMD was pretty much doomed when Intel released their Core 2 processor (mostly due to their failure to respond to it in any meaningful way). Then when Intel released the first quad-core CPU it was pretty much the end (AMD had been touting their upcoming quad-core design but Intel beat them to it months ahead of time). Then there was the lackluster release of the Phenom, and then their foolish $5.4 billion acquisition of ATI (which I still don't understand)... it's no wonder the company is in financial turmoil.

Hopefully the new leadership will be able to keep AMD afloat. I wouldn't want Intel having a monopoly over the desktop microprocessor market.

It was only a matter of time before he had to. And like Squall said, they've been preparing this transition for months. He probably got a nice retirement package, even if his last few years were losses

Your order of events is a bit wrong there.

X2s -> acquisition of ATI -> C2Ds -> Silence from AMD/ATI bringing out crap cards-> Intel Quadcores -> Silence from AMD/ATI bringing out crap cards -> Phenoms ->Even better Intel Quadcores and C2Ds....
(the order of C2Ds and acquisition of ATI might also be reversed in my example...can't remember now)

In other words it's all ATI's fault....which makes them becoming a force in the graphics card market again and becoming ATI/AMDs main money producer rather comical.

Yeah, it wasn't really meant to be in exact order; just ticking off all the things they'd done wrong since the release of the Core 2. It's quite amazing how much they've deteriorated, especially considering that Intel posted a stellar 25% gain in profits in the last quarter.

Thing is, ATI is the only bright spot for AMD at the moment. Their latest release blindsided Nvidia (making Nvidia's already dismal situation even worse). Still, I think their acquisition of ATI was a colossal mistake.

impossible for it to blindside nvidia, since it hasn't blindsided me.

I predicted it would swing back in ATi's favour, this time

This is just typical of nvidia, fortify the current gen, while working on the next, D-12U (GTX3x0) is where its at, anyone foolish enough to buy a D-10U can suffer it..
