I noticed some people use torrents because it comes in parts/segments. They never want to put it on rapidshare or any other online storage places on the internet because they want to ensure people can continueously download their files and also share it around. But sometimes torrents can be slow, it just depends on people's connections to the internet (Like ADSL or Broadband).

Edit: I hope this solves this.

when people use torrents, it ussually means that the file is not freeware and/or opensource...which in most cases means pirated material/ commercial games warez.

In some cases it can be legitamate though.

Sheez, what's with the paranoia? Torrents are legal, if you want reference I could point you to several lawsuits in Sweden. We could of course also stop discussing cars, legit games and women, after all, all three can be used for illegal purposes, but that doesn't mean it's happening per definition.

Like Tomegathericon said, freeware and opensource communities greatly benefit from the shared bandwidth created by using the torrent system. It would be a lot harder to distrubute packages like Linux and OpenOffice. And what do you think of your precious World Of Warcraft? From what I read it uses the same protocol to distribute updates. It's not torrents that are illegal, it's just being used for illegal file transfers. But Kinghelmo isn't even implying that, at least not in this thread.

Anyway Kinghelmo, the speed of torrents mainly depends on how many seeders there are, if there are only a few while there's a lot of leechers (downloaders) the speed will be low. Also, you need to check up on your modem not blocking anything. Some routers have hardware firewalls that will cripple your download speed, uTorrent has a great way to check up on this, since it shows a certain coloured sign on the bottom of the window.

Sites like rapidshare and ect don't always offer great speeds or will force the files to be separated in many parts because it will be too bigs, and the difference between a torrent in many parts and a file on rapidshare/megaupload in many parts is :
The wait time.

Those websites will require you to either subscribe or wait, a looong time, before you can download the next part.

And torrents ARE fast, it depends on the number of seeds you got, but they are usually quite faster than those websites. Rapidshare will usually give me a speed between 15kb/s to 50kb/s (if I'm lucky).

Torrents, the speed will depend on seeders, but 50kb/s is usually very easy to get, as long as you're not downloading a dead torrent.

And yes, torrents are as legal as rapidshare or whatever, it all depends on the content being shared.

Very small files may be better on rapidshare, big files better on torrents. (anything more than 100/200 mb)

Hehe - bet you regret asking that question! Never expect brief replies here. Torrents just Pwn everything else. Accept this fact and you will be happy for the rest of your life.

try a private site, speeds go up to 500kb-1 mbyte. public sites suck

They pwn everything else, until you discover newsgroups

The worst about private sites is that you're forced to share, meanwhile broadband connections here are mostly crippled on their upspeed. 4Mbit DL with 256Kbit UL >_<

Well, private sites can be a pain in the ass, but as long as you let your torrent open for a while you will usually be able to seed back enough.

Leaving it open for a night or two can usually seed quite a bit, the only problems with seeding is when you have connections problem (which I seem to have x_x) or if nobody is leeching, but that's quite rare. A torrent can easily stay alive for more than a week (especially on private sites).

1 - bittorrent has integrity check
2 - bittorrent reduces the bandwidth costs for sharers.
3 - bittorrent leverages bandwidth that is otherwise NEVER used by 98% normal people (non-torrenters just use downstream bandwidth all the time)
4 - rapidshare-like download locations are a single point of failure. once removed, the file is forever lost. will not, NEVER happen in the bittorrent world.

5 - bittorrent IS the fastest download protocol. websites can only serve files as fast as their server speed cap. with bittorrent, your internet connection is optimally used. no more downloading at 80kb/s when you got 20 mbps connection.

Upload while you download, it's genius. You hear a lot of people complaining about the upload part, but they're idiots. They don't even realize they probably never even come close to using their monthly upload limit.

Newsgroups rock, but finding the right places and filtering out all the crap that's compiled there can take a bit, but it's well worth it. The speed you get from it is bloody amazing.

dude just get yourself a newzbin account. that will give you an easy nbz file to download so you dont have to mess about searching for all the bits and decyphering all the names. Plus you dont need to download or update any of the message headers which take eons of time and tons of space.

Hmmm, there's a problem with that though. I need an invitation from a current member to sign up with Newzbin .

But I'm pretty set with what I can get with torrents. I just download a few fansubs here and there now, most of my bandwidth goes towards uploading and downloading homemade media with friends and gaming .

That's where the first problem arises: Not everyone is allowed to leave a 200W device turned on over the entire night just to send people data. Especially when you're not the one paying the bills.

That's problem #2. There's plenty of countries that allow you to legally download every piece of music and every movie. The torrents would force you to upload, which is illegal. If you're downloading from newsgroups, you don't have to upload, thus making things perfectly legal

Anyway, I shouldn't go into detail more than that, I'd hate to have the mods jump on me.

There's always good old direct connect too.

Share 20gb of free linux distros and sourceforge software to meet the public hub's share limit. Then go about doing whatever the heck it is you people do in those hubs.

I personally hate torrents.
Back when I first got DSL and I did not know yet how limited the cap I had actually was, I tried torrents. I was downloading a very large game demo (if I had known how limited my cap was and what would happen I certainly would not have). I found a few seeders and things were going well...untill I reached about 50%, then all the seeders vanished and only a random appearing peer was left but luckily he had most of what I still needed. Well both that peer and about another 6 all ended up getting what they needed from the part I had managed to get from seed...and then whilst I was around 70% and they had gotten everything, they immediately went offline...so I ended up without the file I wanted and about 70% (and another 10% for my personal download) of my cap gone on a bunch of idiots with no decency (and this was even after limiting them to 1 kb/s after I saw they were just trying to leech).

I will scower the entire net before I use torrents, any source even Rapidshare (which I can't use 99% of the time so it's almost just as bad as I also somehow lose a lot of my cap on it eventhough I get nothing) or IRC will do as long as I don't have to use a torrent.

Eventhough it may be just about impossible for everything to be hosted online at propper sites that's still the best method and I am very happy when I find such a link as most of the time I am guaranteed actually getting my bandwidth's worth.. Half those download sites are also pretty darn awfull.
