Yeah same here.
I have a Saitek (brand new, works with FIFA 08 and Spider-man: Friend or Foe perfectly) and when I play with an RPG game (i.e.:Pokemon D/P) my char is always going downwards and nothing seem so be helping it. And the buttons are all messed up too cuz i have only 12 buttons (+ D-pad) on my pad and in the options I can choose from 16 so I guess there's something wrong there.
Hope you can figure out something.

The extra buttons being reported might be coming from the d-pad. In analog mode, the d-pad directions can be considered buttons. If you can turn off the analog, it might help your character constantly moving in one direction.

Regarding using the analog instead of the mouse, try using JoyToKey. It will let you map the different mouse directions & buttons to your gamepad.

Tried that. Doesn't help.
