Trying to transfer a save file from one rom to another (same game)

[QuestionReality]

I had to wipe my hard drive due to a nasty virus, and I was only able to salvage my save file. I re-downloaded the rom for the game, and when I start the game, the save file doesn't show up. It's the same name as the ROM and it's in the BATTERY folder, but it's not working. Can anybody help, or am I going to have to play the game all over again? :[

As said above, discussion of illegitimately obtained games is disallowed, according to forum rules. Abidance to those would be advised, especially the part about "warez".
