PSX Games Modding/Texture Editing
Hi, guys! =)
I used the PSX Multi Converter to analyze the CD's and ISO images of Tekken 2 and Bushido Blade 2 games - It found countless TIM images, that it can convert to BPM... They seem to look like ordinary textures, just cut in parts. I know that I can get them and edit on my PC, and that PSX ISO's and/or CD's can be patched. I wonder - can I patch the CD with updated textures, how, and what do I need for it? This is just for personal use, no copyright issues, since: a) It is modding - you can see countless mods for PC games online. b) The games are old, both Sqare and Namco do not get money for them now. b) I do it for myself, and not for public release. So, CAN the edited TIM textures be put back on a CD? And how? EDIT: Discussion on this topic was maintained here: Modifying a game/iso? And yes, I was able to replace some Tekken textures: http://img158.imageshack.us/img158/1103/akeditmr0.jpg Last edited by Echad; June 10th, 2008 at 00:09. |

I haven't done any texture editing but imagine it would be like this:
When you edit the images you would have to convert them back to .tim with the TIM utility (google for it). After that you would probably have to replace the old ones manually by HEX editing.

Aha, any other methods, as hex-editing the whole .iso would be pretty cumbersome. =\
And - .tim files are paletted? And if, than how much colours are available to them? Edit: I found countless tim/bmp and tim/tga convert tools, but have no frickin' idea on how to put them back on disk. =\ Last edited by Echad; February 7th, 2008 at 06:50. |

I've tried to edit a game. I tried to mod Driver 2. (Not all games have .tim files)
So for a beginning i wanted to change the splash screens. 1. Extract the files of the the image with Magic Iso 2. Converted .tim files to .bmp using Timviewer 3. Then I edited a splash screen namely the first one you see when the game starts( or boot). 4. Converted back to .tim 5.a) Made a new .img or .iso file with the edited splash screen. or b) Dragged the edited .tim file into to the dir where it was in Magic Iso Test result: Game did not start! There was only a black screen. Conclusion: Edited and replacing a file results in not playable game Any suggestions?? srry for bad english, i am Dutch ![]() http://www.zophar.net/utilities/psxutil.html good site to find tools Last edited by tzwientjuh; February 7th, 2008 at 15:25. WELL, AFAIK, the files that PSXMC finds, cannot be found in the CD directory, probably will need to double-check it, but I thought it found them the same as XA or STR tracks. =\ So this is the biggest trouble.
Need just to try a simple "decompiling .iso, changing the .tim, inserting it back, recompiling .iso" just to check, will it work at all. I am also sure that the games use different .tim formats, at least the BB2 ones looked a little bit less than 8-bit deep. Trouble is with the "inserting .tim back part". =\ P.S. And yes, I used Zophar's site for utils. Edit: tzwientjuh - it is most likely by your conversion having bigger size, i.e. 16 bits instead of 8... Last edited by Echad; June 10th, 2008 at 00:12. |
