Problem backing up PSX games

I was using the sticky guide here on the forums to make a backup of FF7 Disc 1 (with CloneCD), and my PS1 wasn't able to read it. It gave me the old "Please insert PlayStation format disc" error. So after that I tried it out with Alcohol 120%. My PS1 actually read the disc, but it only read the music, not the game. So my question is, do I have to have something special (i.e. modded PS1) to be able to play the backup disc on the PS1? Thanks in advance.

That's your problem right there. You can only play your backups if you have a mod chip installed in your PlayStation. PlayStation disks have certain information in them that regular CDs don't have which is a protective measure to prevent piracy. BTW: If you do get a modchip, get a pro to install it . I tried to install one in my PS2 myself and I ended *****ing it up big time.

Okay, that's all I needed to know. BTW, how much should I expect to pay for a modchip?

I payed about $20 for mine (PS2). It all depends on your the version of your PlayStation. You might have to look at the bottom of your PS1 and see what bios it uses. It should say like SCPH-****. It's very important that you know what version it is so you can get the right modchip for it. Oh, and expect to pay about another $25 for installation.

You can get more info at these sites:

I had no problems installing mine on a ps2. It took me two days, but in the end it worked like a charm . The only thing I had soldered before this was some basic wire to wire connections and wire to board connections in a pc class in high school. Its great being able to play backups on ps2 games so I don't ruin my originals (I'm kind of a game collector of sorts, so I like everything to be in as good of condition as possible). I'd imagine that a ps1 would be easier to do. Installation can be quite expensive some places though, that's why I chose to go out on a limb and try it myself. I learned A LOT, even how to remove a stripped screw . Good luck with whatever you chose to do. For my ps games though, I still like using emulators so I can play on the go.

I think it would be safer/cheaper to just use an emulator to play ps1 backups rather than going that route though, but that's just my opinion.

I'm also a game collector too and that was my purpose of getting a modchip also, so I could protect my originals. I've ruined many of my PlayStation disks in the past. I've soldered before, but it was nothing like soldering the PS2 modchip. I was literally ripping my hair out in frustration the whole time. You really have to have precise hands and have a really accurate soldering iron to install it yourself. I had a really thick and clunky one and I ended up getting solder all in between the pins around the bios chip and it fried my laser in the process somehow. Speaking of lasers, does anyone know of a good link to where I could get a replacement PS2 laser so I could get my PS2 up and running again?

I had BIG problems with the bios pins myself, as they are so small and close together. But, with enough de-solder wick, and a couple of tries, everything ended up ok. Ya, it is pretty easy to screw things up, but some how I got lucky I guess. Um, in my own opinion though, I'd just go buy a new PS2 instead of a new laser, as it will cost you around $50-$60...from what I saw anyways.

Well enough talk about scary PS2 modding, this chap wants to chip his PSX. The chips are very cheap and the procedure is very easy. Low wattage iron with a fine point and you're away.

Well, the situation is, the modchip is already installed in my PS2 and the guy who installed it said it needs a new laser. I payed $20+shipping for the mod chip, $25/install and another $25 for the desoldering because I made more of a mess trying to desolder it myself. I've already invested too much into fixing my PS2 already, I might as well go all of the way.

@moomoomoo: Just trying to let the guy know of the horrors of modding first before he makes the decision of trying to do it himself . The results could be disastrous.

yeah but, isnt it much much easier to install a mod chip in a PS1 vs PS2? regarding places to solder and the difficulty, etc.

I've never tried it on a ps1 myself, but my one friend bought a bunch of ps1 modchips in bulk and ended up doing like twelve installations for all his friends...so it must be pretty easy. Not to mention, I'd do a ps1 installation for someone for free, because even if the installation went wrong, a used ps1 can cost you about $20-30 dollars (I've even seen them go for $10), so its no big deal. PS2 require about 20 wires...I'm guessing ps1 would only require a couple.

Hmm...modding a ps1 sounds like fun actually... I may get a used ps1 and mod it sometime just for heck of it :P If I ever do, report back how hard it is

Oh, and to keep things on topic somewhat, use alcohol over cloneCD, as I could never get anything to work correctly with the later. Alcohol has never failed me once.

a counterpoint: CloneCD has never failed me once either. i used it for years before i heard of Alcohol 120%. so, meh. my advice, like always: try everything, and see what works for you.
