.img size difference

Probably not the greatest way to start my first post, but I'm not entirely sure if this violates the first rule. But here's hoping.

I decided I wanted to make ISOs of some of the games I own, so I wouldn't have to lug any CDs around with me, or constantly exchange for others if I'm in that mood. Wild Arms being one of my favorites, I did that first.

The file size was over 600 megabytes.

So I did some investigating. It lead me here, plus a few other sites. I downloaded a file of Tactics Ogres (for the sole purpose of comparison) and found the .img file to be 300x (22 megabytes) less than my Wild Arms .img file. I ran the game and didn't notice a drop in quality either.

So I'll finally get to my question. How do I go about doing the same? I noticed in earlier threads stating zipping the files is pretty much useless, and didn't see anything regarding file size except for back-up discs.

For legal reference, I own both Tactics Ogres and Wild Arms. I'd prefer making my own file though; something about it just feels better.

Thanks in advance. Or apologies for wasting your time, if this happens to be deleted.

Re: .img size difference

It's simple, some games are smaller then others. Since you own Tactics Ogre, try making an image of it and compare to the one you downloaded, should be the same size.

Re: .img size difference

It's still illegal to download an ISO regardless of whether you own the game. Plus it wastes time.

Re: .img size difference

If you own the game and make the backup yourself, you know for sure it will work right.

Re: .img size difference

Well compressing images with RAR (2.x) is worthwhile as you can shave of quite a bit with it, and Mooby's plugin can read RARed bins IIRC.

Re: .img size difference

Does that decrease performance since it's compressed?

Re: .img size difference

the ISO would be more likely bigger than the files in CD, because it contain the protection and also burning program control files [like CloneCD]. But, if you burnt it into CD-R, it's size would be the same as your original CD.

What I can say, thats normal !

Illegal? Well, I suppose that makes me a criminal. :/

I did try the original game this time, and yes, it was stupidly simple. My error. But the image file was still 78.7 megabytes. Not nearly Wild Arms size, but still rather large.

That still leaves me wondering how the file I downloaded was 23 megabytes. It wasn't zipped, or compressed. I just wonder about the technology behind.

But thank you, I'll try compressing and using that plug-in.

If the downloaded image was smaller by that much, it probably had something stripped from the game. Maybe videos or dialogue.
