Question about BIOSes

Quick question

why do PSX emu's use BIOSes? I mean... is it just because it makes their job easier? or is it done to avoid some sort of legal trouble?

I'm only asking because I tried VGS recently and I realized that IT didn't use a bios file, and I think Bleem! used one they coded themselves

Is it that really hard to reverse engineer the PSX bios and code one that isn't illegal to use?

(Yes... IMO dumping BIOSes of consoles you own is illegal, why? BIOSes are on ROM chips right? so it wouild be like dumping an N64 ROM which is illegal even if you own the game thanks to the DMCA)

randy completely reverse engineered the bios for bleem. connectix admitted to using "some code" from the psx bios in vgs.

VGS and Bleem use a bios file, but they are embedded within the executable instead of an external file like other free PSX emulators.

For instance, open tnkXfs.dat of VGS with ResHacker and you will see the internal BIOS file.

So VGS and Bleem were shut down as they were actually selling Sony's BIOS? It makes sense, so as no action has ever been taken against any other free emus.

Well, they weren't integrated into the .exe of the free emus, for one.

So, the ones that came with the Bio's where shut down? Is that why we have to search for isos all over the net?

ISOs? or BIOS?

There are ways of dumping psx BIOS but I prefer downloading them from the net.

But I have a question: Like the PS2 runs psx games, so if we use a PS2 BIOS in a ps1 emulator; will it work?

Bios are actually pretty illegal if you don't have the psx, but did sony state that rule? If they didn't, who cares whether you own a psx or not?

If you use an AMD 760 chipset on a Pentium 3 will it work? Of course not. They're not compatible with each other, although both the Athlon and the Pentium 3 use the same x86 instructions. The BIOS is the basic chip needed to start the computer and perform IO functions but it requires all the proper hardware to be there in order for the computer to function.

The Bios file is the core of any computer based machine such the consoles and PC itself. I believe that a PS2 bios is different that that of a PS 1 and probably wont work!

not to mention that epsxe doesnt have the power to avoid sony if sued, so the best thing is to ask the gamers to get their own bios and at the sametime , save the time needed to create one!!

Would it really matter though that the people dumped their own BIOSes? I mean, if people dump an N64 ROM that they own for their own purposes, it's still techmically illegal, even if they don't distribute it.

See what I mean? a bios image is simply the data stored on a rom chip dumped into a file, so it's the same concept isnt it?

mmmm,.....speaking about that, i cant tell ya about data stored in the rom chip, coz, i dont have enough information concerning that. but what i know IS that the BIOS, as i said is the core, and is the one which can manage memory cards , play cds and most of all, check the country code of the PS cd to see if it is a back up cd or not, and thats the reason why you need speacil hardware such as game shark to run back-up cds

edit: i dont have any ROM, but if you do and you know how to hack into it , try to look for the bios file there. if it was present, then what you are saying is right.....

yea, most instruction manuals state that copying of a game for any purpose is illegal.
