DVD remote to PSX-USB converter

This seemed like the best place of any to ask this question. I wanted a way to control the dvd player on my computer via some wireless method. I was thinking of ordering ATI's $50 RF usb remote. But since I already had a PSX - USB converter for using playstation controlers on my computer (got the radioshack model - cheap $10 and works great) I figured why not grab one of those DVD remotes that have a sensor that plugs into the gameport? I thought that it would recognize the button presses on the remote but it doesn't. Any ideas why? Has anyone else tried this? Since it only set me back 7 bucks it's not a big deal but I'd like to get it to work.
