Speed VGS with.... ?

As we know, VGS is one of the best PSX emulators. It's compatibility, easy config ( almost nothing ! ). Ok, no D3D enhancing, just software rendering , it's out, etc...but how we can increase it's speed ? People here reported that we can make VGS faster with a lot of things... And you ? Do you have any way to make it better ?

I really dont like VGS... I have an emulator for enhancements like netplay - tons of memcard space - save states - a lot better graphix - better sound (surround as well...more people tend to have surround on their computers...and I am not discluded) oh yes and a wide selection of devices for a controller... VGS is just like PSX and I dont understand why people are still supporting it. All you need to do is save up 70 american dollars [tops] I dont remember how much yen... (I really dont care how you make the money ~ it isnt that much) for a system and modchip (if the modchip is needed that badly)

edit: and if you are having speed problems then all the more reason to get the real thing!

Aldo's speed up is supposed to give you more speeds.

Anyway the only good way of getting speed ups with vgs is to upgrade your pc.

That might be the biggey right there... if you are having speed probs you can get a decent system real cheap that can push the PSX beyond what it can normally do ~ so use ePSXe or PCSX if it comes with at least a voodoo 3 or geforce 2
(I prefer ePSXe)
I'm just simplifying this for all the n00bs so all you techies dont nag on me :embl:

Do you know if we can get better VGS results with a fast cd drive ( 60 X or more... ) and enabling DMA Channel ?

I don't think so. VGS runs CDs at the psx read speed of 2x so I don't think getting a faster CD-ROM will help. Also, for psx emulation (in other emulators) sometimes a slower CD-ROM is best, since it doesn't have to spin up so much. Games like Chrono Cross run horribly in epsxe using CDs. It spins it like crazy, leading to a lot of stuttering.

The best performance increase for VGS would be a CPU upgrade, not that it requires that fast of a CPU anyways. VGS has pretty low system requirements and a Pentium 2 class CPU @ 500 Mhz should run it at full speed.

I agree... I have a friend with an Duron 1.2 GHZ, and he has excelent results using VGS. And Duron have only 64 kb of L2 cache. Do we need a full speed L2 cache to run it better ?

VGS runs better with L2 cache but it will run on systems without. I have a 366 Mhz K6-2 labtop and VGS runs on it (albeit slowly). It also ran decent on my friend's 500 Mhz K6-2. L2 cache is stated as a requirement in VGS's system requirements but it can run without it. And Durons have full speed L2 cache, since it's on-die.

It ran at full speed on a PII 266 and 48MB of EDO RAM in my case.

I used MemTurbo to free memory and Diskeeper to defragment my hard drive to improve the overall performance of my computer.

Use Daemon tools to emulate cd drive and load the image on it.
It will definitely work faster, the speed prob is definitely because of reading sounds from the cd.

i can run vgs and epsxe at full speed on a k6-2 500 @ 533 (took off oc @ 600 cause of heat/stability )

every game i have played with epsxe or vgs runs liquid smooth, using a gf4 mx 420 pci graphics card.

you never know, they could have meant external L2 is a requirement. With a mid range graphics card slow systems like mine can get psx games looking 50x better than on a psx, still running as good.
