OK I understand that the psx works differently BUT

When emulated do you precache all the textures needed or every texture in the game?

Wouldn't it be easier (for 3d hardware anyway ) to extract the textures from the cd or ISO and convert them to whatever (DXT3?) and load themm ALL in video ram and that would make a speed increase of about 20-30fps
Also per pixel lighting would be nice along with some DOT 3 BM.

Pardon my ignorance on this subject. I am no emulation guru.

Is it even currently possible to rip the textures off the cd?

Interesting question. I wouldn't see why it wouldn't be. Then again, if u also rip the music, midis, fmvs and other things, u'd be trying to make a PC port of a PSX game Don't forget, emus try to do what the real thing would do. BTW, r all textures put in the same format?

Surely that would still require shedloads of vRAM.
  • Pete's plugin already can stress out 64Mb cards IIRC, with 2xSai
  • There is a hell of a lot of texture data in some games, and some of them may be very small. Small= inefficent
Just my thoughts.

yeah, that's why pc games store them on the hardisk. Do u know that Baulder's Gate 2 takes 2.5 GB of space for the full install??!! and that's even without the TOB expansion
