Best Japanese games

I've heard that there are alot of good games for PSX that only got released in Japan. Can anyone reccomend a few? I like fighting games, driving games, sports and action. Thanks.

that games that are only released in japan that I know off are often (but not always) quite different from the genres you mention.

While not specifically the genres you mentioned, you might want to take a look at this thread:

There are tons of great Japanese games that never see the light of day in the US and those gems are hidden in Japan.

Yeah, I see what you're saying Samor. It seems like most of the games are dating sims. I don't think I'd enjoy those especially since I can't read Japanese. Thanks for the responses anyway.

...Tobal 2 is an excellent beat'em up that was only released in Japan. There are also Japanese games which are superior when compared to the English ones, like...

Rival Schools (featuring an EXCELLENT "school-story" mode, that Capcom was too bored to translate)

Ace Combat 3 (featuring some wonderful anime cutscenes, missing from the English version)

...aside of course, from the usual "toning-down" of games that contain lots of swearing, blood and "violence" in general... (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure comes to mind...)

I can't get past a stage 'cos the instructions are in jap and I don't know what to do

...your guess is as good as mine

...but I think either because they're on a "schedule" to release the game in a set date (so whatever is left untranslated, they just leave it out) or because of the "violence" (if present).

I think that the PSX game I would like to import the most would be the 3D version of Dragon Quest IV.
