My Last Attempt at the PSX Controller to PC Mod.... *56k Beware*

Aight, its be a couple weeks.. Gave me enough time to cool off from being pissed about the whole situation... And of course my dilemma is still unsolved..

So went out and bought an extension cord.. Figured out what wire goes to what terminal and in the picture you can see.
Also in the Picture, you will noticed the ****ed up male db-25 connector.. Although it looks unsightly and ****ed up, its perfectly fine.

Ive spent up to about 30 bucks so far on this project and ive yet to show for anything. So in a feeble attempt, i ask for someone to take a look at the pic and tell me exactly what wire color/number goes to what pin on the DB-25 connector.. Ive got a couple of diodes left that have been unused so hopefully i wont **** it up this time..

Keep in mind, im on XP, using a sound card, and the LPT ports are working perfectly. Also my controller is working fine too.

Thnx to anyone who can help...
Every single instruction set seems to be different in its own little way, hopefully someone can finalize this for me.

Why can't I attach a file when I edit a message  New post required...

OK, I have done exactly this project, I'll try to help.

Your numbering is a bit confusing, why not just use 9->1, left to right, these are the correct PSX pin numbers.

So;

PSX pin 9 (grey) -> LPT pin 12
PSX pin 8 (white) -> unused
PSX pin 7 (blue) -> LPT pin 4
PSX pin 6 (yellow) -> LPT pin 3
PSX pin 5 (green) -> LPT pin 5,6,7,8,9 (see below for more info)
PSX pin 4 (red) -> LPT pin 18,19
PSX pin 3 (black) -> +9v (see below)
PSX pin 2 (orange) -> LPT pin 2
PSX pin 1 (brown) -> LPT pin 10

The bare wire is unused as you say.

I used 5 diodes, but if you only have a couple left, connect them to LPT pins 6 and 8 like the picture.

Leave the +9v connection for now, you can do this after you get it working (if you want vibration, don't like it myself).

Good luck!

See here http://www.ngemu.com/forums/showthre...threadid=17755 for a test utility that doesn't depend on Windows.

cool!

thnx for the util, im about to test it in XP..

well i soldered everything up.. (matched colors to db25 pins as you said) and well.. nothing..

NTPad XP 1.1 still doesnt react when i press a button.
Although when i unplug the controller from the socket, it then pops up and error message saying the controller isnt plugged in or cannot be found, i plug it in, click retry and it sees it...

but pressing the buttons and trying to calibrate it still doesnt work.

EDIT: Welp, i just tested your prog, nice btw. And nothing registers as if im pressing nothing.

okay..

review this picture, and make sure everything is right..
note the black, white and ground, not connected to anything..
even tho you cant see it, the green is connected to the diodes.

That definitely looks correct. Damn

Do you have a multimeter or something that you could use to test the connection from the PSX end to the LPT pins?

Other things to try;

Make sure your LPT port is not set to EPP mode in the bios.

Try running the test utility in DOS mode. If you don't have a boot disk you can get a utility to create one here http://www.amptron.com/utilities/DOS60.EXE.

Try a slower communication speed: "psxtest -p1 -c10". BTW, what controller are you using?

Maybe your LPT port is not supplying enough power. Try connecting +5V directly to the green wire (connect the ground to 18-19).

Try it on another computer.

I really hope you can get this working.

Yea..

i dont have a multimeter (i need one tho) but i use the simple battery and led trick.

in the bios it is indeed set to standard.

the test prog works flawless, its just that when i press anything the hex values dont change.

i'll try the communication slow speed

okay, so connecting the bare ground to 18 and 19 will give it 5v automatically? is that all i change/do? is connect the ground to 18 and 19, and leave everything as is?

and im about to try it on another comp as well.

yea im really hoping i can get this to work, and i really appreciate the help.

No, I meant connect an external 5V supply or battery (3V might be ok, the official spec is 3.6V). The +ve end to the green wire, the -ve end to your ground connection (18,19). This is just to rule out the possiblity that the controller cannot draw enough power from the LPT port. I wouldn't bother doing this if you can test it on another computer though.

What is strange is that the ntpad driver recognizes that something is connected but can't read it.

Hey Tori try this diagram
Ii used the diagram at Emulatronia but it didnt work right .
This one worked fine for me and my Dualshock controller rocks!!
As far as I know the wires are numbered:

1-Brown
2-Orange
3-Grey
4-Black
5-Red
6-Yellow
7-Blue
8-
9-Green.
See that the wires do not touch any other LPT pin other than the required(That was the problem i had)

That diagram is the same as the wiring instructions that I gave him.

But where have you got the colours from?!? His first photo clearly shows that pin 9 -> grey for example.

Actually i forgot to mention that i cut open the controllers connector, here in India it is Playstation has just released!!!!
No I am not kidding the Playstation One has just released last month!!!
getting my hands on a extension is difficult so i cut open the controllers end and that was the combination I found in both controllers I opened.
The only difference between the wires of both was that the dualshock had an extra grey wire.

The wire colours are NOT standard! On my extension cable I have;

1 - grey
2 - brown
3 - red
4 - orange
5 - yellow
6 - green
7 - blue
8 - black
9 - white

I can't believe you've only just got the PS1 . I thought India was fairly advanced technology-wise. At least, the UK government is very interested in encouraging IT workers from India to move over here.

The main reason is the pricing
Not that the PS2 is not available, it is in the black market
but it aint easy to con your folks to buying a PS2 that costs 21000 Indian Rupees i.e. more than 400$ or 300pounds!!!!!

The PS2 is only 200 pounds over here, and the UK is usually more expensive than the rest of Europe, and especially the US, for computer hardware!

Electronics (especially imported ones ) cost high here cause of the import duty i.e. about 30% I think.
Neway I am thinking of getting a PS2 from UK.
i have a few close relatives in UK infact my whole PC has been imported from UK.
