You Don't

Unfortunately with the sale of the VGS program to Sony you will never see an update that will allow the program to work with the NT kernal (NT, 2000 and XP). The only way is a duel boot or as you've found a virtual PC program (Virtual PC or VMware).
Personally I still use Windows ME but have installed duel boots for friends. dig out an old copy of Windows 95 or 98, these old operating systems take up very little hard drive space and can sit very comfortably on a hard disk with XP. If you need instructions on how to duel boot reply and I will help.
Sorry if this is not what you wanted to hear but you can blame Sony for that.

The reason is taht VGS try to make either direct hardware calls, which Windows NT/2K/XP doesn't support for stability/security reasons, or it is trying to use bugs in the 9x kernel for speed ups.
Like DB7 said, it's simpy not going to work. I suggest you try having a look through some of the ePSXe faqs and so on. ePSXe has no problems on my system.

ePSXe

ePSXe is a great emulator. However you should be prepared for many an hour configuring the plugins. If like me you have no patience for configuring try out the latest version of Adripsx, it has a new GUI that makes configuration a breeze. However it isn't perfect so you will have to get in there and config eventually.

Or if you're willing...

I'd likewise suggest going back to Win9x, preferably Win98SE. I got it working on a late 1998 () Pentium II 450 Mhz box with a 16MB nVidia TNT1. VGS doesn't require the BIOS ROM, or anything else, so if you don't have it or a PSX, I'd stick with it. It also requires very little/no configuration.

FYI, it was VGS 1.4 on my old box.

Hehe... I didn't know there were Pentium IIs in 1997. Also, the "BIOS" in VGS is, shall we say, "built-in". That's why they were sued.

Meh, I meant 1998, my bad.

Sued yes, but it's still smooth as heck, you've got to give it that.

...then you have to spend about an extra 15 minutes trying to get the best config on your system. But when you get that config, it's worth it.

Once you get taht config, you only have to change one or two options at most for certain games. Which is why I use ePSXecutor.
