Problem with PSX? Or problem with backup?

Hey everybody. I recently made a backup copy for my FF9 DISC 1.
I popped it into my modded PSone (the small one), and everything seemed to work out fine.

I watched the opening cinematic and was taken to the main menu when it ended.

However, problems started once I pressed 'Start Game.'
I heard the CD whirring within the PSone and waited and waited for something to come up.

After about a minute or two, the words 'Art Director' appeared, though still a bit faded, on the bottom right-hand corner of the screen.

It stayed like that for a while. I gave up waiting after that.

What could the problem be? My PSone? or the backup?
I burned the backup using CloneCD, if that helps.

Thanks for your time.

The back up is corrupted, check your source for scratched sectors.
Try cleaning, re-dump, and burn again.
Use another CD--Burn soft (CDRWIN).

Sorry to sound helpless, but how do I 'check my source for scratched sectors?'
And what to you mean by 'clean'?

Thanks again for responding.

Check your CD-R's surface (both up-side & down-side) for scartched areas made/happened because of the bad use of the CD-ROM media.

Clean your CD-ROM from dust & finger prints using a soft cotton (cloth).

Download ClonyXXXL, and use the bad sector scanner.

alternatively, buy a DVDRW and rip the disk using that.
