PCSX2 Pad emulation problems

I've got the latest (0.6) version of PCSX2, all up and running ok, but the thing is, other than in the BIOS menus, I can't get the pad to work! I've mapped the buttons to keys on my keyboard (cursor keys mapped to the D-pad as the obvious choice, and E,D,X and S mapped to circle, square etc) but these do nothing on the games that get 'in-game'. I even tried a Genesis emultor, PGEN on pcx2, which works, but I cant navigate menus because of the non-working buttons. Any ideas? What i the pad-hack in cpu options? (not that it has any effect on my problem)
