PS2 durability-ness when watching DVD
I was wondering, will the PS2 laser will wear out at a faster rate if we watch DvD movies ? I understand that playing DvD movies requires the PS2 laser to operate at all times while if we play DvD game, sometime it will operate, sometimes not ( operates during CG movies, cutscenes etc.)
Can someone confirm this? Thanks!

Re: PS2 durability-ness when watching DVD
Zaryl,
We cannot confirm for sure...there is always the possibility of faulty parts. However from an owners standpoint...we can say this We purchased our PS2 in 2001....it has since then been the center for our multimedia habits....both gaming and movie DVD watching... Even after purchasing an actual DVD player...we and our wife continue to use the PS2 as a DVD player (the bedroom)...Our PS2 is going on around 3 years old...never had a problem, and it's still going strong... Perhaps we are lucky enough to have had a unit with decent parts....but it has done well with DVD...Kinda makes sense since it was designed to play them....Newer models should be built even better...Hope this helps |

Re: PS2 durability-ness when watching DVD
I bought my PS2 on it's European release. I used it for DVD playback from the start. It's still working fine.

Re: PS2 durability-ness when watching DVD
Well I got my PS2 a couple years back and no problems here. Its in my room and before I got my dvd player for my birthday it's all I would watch movies on. Uh how is your PS2 dying Wang?
Also there have not been any public cases of this happening. I mean I have had this one DVD player for like about 4 years now and I had NO problems with it. And all it does is play movies. And my family watches alot of em. I don't think this is a problem at all.

Re: PS2 durability-ness when watching DVD
my laser died a while back and i'm still mad at sony because of it. made me pay $60 bucks just to get it repaired...
*people here last summer would know my greivances barely touched it also, i guess i just had a bad ps2, same thing happened to my friend, laser crapped out. he just got a brand new ps2 while i had mine repaired. *i am not gonna give sony the satisfaction of getting another sale of a ps2 because of their crappy hardware. *my friend and i had the 1st generation of ps2 btw.

Re: PS2 durability-ness when watching DVD
You guys. It isnt the laser. The first generation PS2's are fine with the laser. It is the gear. On X-Play they showed how to fix it also. The new ones have a different gear.
The problem is with the 1st gens is that the gear would get off set and then some games and DVD's wouldnt load up. Sometimes they would. I hope you all know now. Tada! Heres the link: http://www.techtv.com/xplay/features...516150,00.html

Re: PS2 durability-ness when watching DVD
So that was what they were showing about.
I switched the TV on 3 minutes before XPlay was gonna end and saw them with a nude ps2. Thought to myself, "What the heck..."

Re: PS2 durability-ness when watching DVD
I had a scph10001 and then it stopped reading disks so I just traded it in for a new one at EB, was same price as sending it back to Sony. But I think that most problems with the ps2 breaking is because of cheap parts. I had a dvd get stuck in my ps2, and when i tried to pull open the drive to get it out the front panel of the drive snapped right off, when I was barely pulling on it. So now I'm stuck with it. It still works, just has no front. Maybe Sony will learn not to use such cheap parts on the PS3 so they don't have to do so many repairs.

Re: PS2 durability-ness when watching DVD
Repairs give money.
Sony wants money. Crap parts broke easily. Broken parts must be repaired. Conclusion: Sony doesn't care about crap.

Re: PS2 durability-ness when watching DVD
nope. it's not a quirk. a friend of mine has a >relatively< old PS2 (not scph10001....ill have to test that out on my OTHER friend's PS2)...
BUT on that PS2 a DVD+R did work. IIRC PS2s have supported DVD+/- R since near the beginning, if not the very beginning of the US release. |
