How can I dump my n64 games?

I have already done a little research into this area. I understand there is a rom dumping device that I need. I also saw in another thread here that I can do it with one of the older gamesharks? Can someone please explain this to me? I am NOT going to download the rom, so don't even bother mentioning it.

you need a serial cable and GS
Go to GSCC utilities and select ROM EDIt or something then there's a dump option.

Is there a specific gameshark I need? The forum post I saw earlier said I needed an older one. If yes, how do I tell them apart?
