I was just thinking that you should atleast know how to program an emulator first. As you said before, you don't know where to begin. And if you don't know where to begin then it will take you a long long time. By the time you got somewhere the other emulators would have exceeded the need for updates. I think you should get your knowledge in order at a lower level and work your way up. I'll be following a similar path soon, but I don't intend to stand up there with the GC and PS2 for my first project. Think realistically. Even for experienced programmers these take a few years. You're looking at a good 2 decades if you continue to act this way.

Write an emu for something that's very basic and completely documented, like Chip8, 2600 etc. If you try and write an emu for GC, you'll not just have to write it based on documentation, but you'll also have to reverse-engineer a lot of hardware. It's really jumping in at the deep end.

OK, the one thing no one has said so far that is EXTREMELY important is this: You can be a highly experienced programmer and STILL not know the first thing about writing an emulator.
Before you can begin writing an emulator, you must study emulation and know how emulators work at the core. Proof of this: I've been programming for a very long time, and I still wouldn't know the first thing about putting together a decent emulator. It would be like asking someone who codes for Win32 to port all their apps to Linux GTK. It's a totally different animal. |

I hate to break it to everyone, but this thread is dead. The people who asked the original questions have moved on and so should everyone else. Stop rambling.
