Re: GBA emulator for Dreamcast?

I think it would be nice but I don't know if the dc is capable of running a gba emulator @ full speed (I hope it can). Maybe if and when there is an emulator and it is fully optimized it will be able to play at or close to full speed. I think the reason why it hasn't been done yet is either the dc isn't powerful enough, there are already a lot of gba's sold, and that the game boy player was released (that thingy that goes onto the gamecube that plays gba games). There have been emulators for dc for a lot of different consoles so a gba emulator for dc probably isn't that far off. Then again isn't the dc not able to emulate a snes @ full speed?

Re: GBA emulator for Dreamcast?

Dreamcast could probably run a SNES at full speed if the emulator was more optimised. After all, it was based on Snes9x

that doesnt matter since its a completly different console....

Re: GBA emulator for Dreamcast?

Dreamsnes runs certain games at full speed, but some don't, it heavily depends on the game, and especially on the version of Dreamsnes of course.

Re: GBA emulator for Dreamcast?

Well, GBA might run well, but the emulator must make some progress in speed in the early stages, otherwise it won't be playable. Because I think SNES requires less power than GBA, and DreamSnes is at version 0.98
So I am waiting for 1.0 to arrive, maybe that will have even greater speed.

Re: GBA emulator for Dreamcast?

Since psx games can run full speed on dreamcast, GBA games can too probably.

Re: GBA emulator for Dreamcast?

okay here's of an explanation of why DC wouldn't be able to run most GBA games at all, because of RAM limitations DC only has 16 MB of RAM lets take a first gen GBA game say tony hawk I beleave that its file form (rom) is about 5MB that leaves 11 MB for the author to program while it is possible to load a GBA game and emulated it it will be hard, and imposible for really big GBA games.... "but it can run psx games, and there 650 MB" true but this is on cd media designed to be loaded one part at a time much like a dc, you load only what you need. Although in GBA this is somewhat true (you only load about 250K of RAM at a time) but GBA uses a cart you can instantly get what you need know loading screen needed. If the dc tried to constantly read a cd getting specific data from a GBA rom on a CDR it would run excruciatingly slowly.

Re: GBA emulator for Dreamcast?

This has been discussed to *death* on other DC message boards, but the short summary is this:

A GBA emulator for DC is quite possible, and could run at full speed -- However, the time and resources required to create it are significant, and it's not likely that someone will invest what's necessary to do it.

Go out and buy a GBA -- the damn things are dirt-cheap.

Rand.
