It doesn't work yet. Just wait a few more years and it'll eventually come around.

I don't think it will take years , but still some months for comercial runs to run .

Nah....DC emulation has progressed rather quickly and Icarus is coming along very nicely. The Dreamcast surely is difficult to emulate like the PS2. It's come a long way.

Have to agree with rei about the gd-rom also ppl seem to be working harder on ps2 emulation. Have you seen releases for DC yet?

Icarus can run Namco Museum, but with some weird displaying/non-displaying texture issues, so it isnt at all viewable properly atm.
Also, certain commercial software does some interesting initialization/preliminary crap and I have gotten a sofdec movie playing sample working in katana, which is fairly important since many commercial games will use these apis aswell as playing the sofdec intro screen first when running a game on a real dc.
I'm pretty busy with r/l atm, but I am in the slow process of converting much katana code to c source code for learning more about the dreamcast, since there is so much information to be reversed . Currrent task is g2dma... Just reversed+emulated the aica real-time-clock for storing the real-world date/time.
The homebrew apps dont really document much at all about the dreamcast in any sufficient manner to emulate commercial software... hence it is gonna be a slow progress, but yah hopefully icarus will be a rough guideline to dc emulation's progress =)

I started emulating the dreamcast a long time ago. I have been the first to publicise pics of the dreamcast katana samples being emulated, and of the bios emulation, so dreamcast emulation is more advanced than many realise. However there are still some very complex parts of Katana that must be reversed to be able to start getting display output from commercial games. This information just isnt publically available and so it does understandably take time.
Even when we get to that stage in 1yr+ we then have the matter of speed =)
This is gonna take some hardcore coding and some good work from intel/amd

Well, look at it this way, we have a PCSX2 forum where we discuss PS2 emulation, its future, and its progression. Why can't we have a DC Emulation forum where we can do the same for DC?

I think the dc emu would take the longest just because of the cd. It would be awfully hard for normal ppl to rip the roms at stuff like that

What's the difference between a gd-rom and cd-rom? Are the little 'ups and downs' a different size?

Basicaly there are two tracks on a GD rom. One is the one that PC CD-roms can read. The other is the big part that only the DC can read. How this is done is not disclosed.
There are two main theorys:
1) A lot of the Error protection/ correction data is removed from the CD
2) The data is more compact (like you said)
I don't know for sure, but I assume the later.

Don't GD-ROMs hold around 1GB of data?
