I don't know for sure, but from my experience an emulator that only runs demos is around... 2% done, maybe.

edit:
ohhh...
that batard must've thought the PS2 demos are like the computer game demos. Very different things indeed.

If you loved the Dreamcast, I would reccomend the GameCube. It is the spiritual successor to the Dreamcast. Sega is putting a lot of their best titles into it. You also mentioned a love for Capcom arcade games. Since Nintendo and Capcom are VERY close right now, I would say that it would be stupid to get any other console right now. Nintendo has most of the games that you would like to play I'm sure.

I know that a lot of people here are saying to get the PS2, but you also said that you wanted a console that would last a long time. I don't think that a PS2 would be a good choice for that reason. Now is a good time to get a GameCube. The first killer games will be released this year. I think that the PS2 has been wholly dissapointing so far. It has been out for nearly 2 years, and only has a handful of good games. Not to mention that it is already being overshadowed by the PS3. Sony is indeed shortening the lifecycle of the PS2 in order to get the PS3 out the door. The reason? Nintendo and Microsoft's consoles are too far advanced in comparison to the PS2, and Sony needs to stay competitive.

You might think that the Xbox would be good too, but I really don't think that it wold be a good buy. It is on very unfirm ground right now. It is only selling reasonably in North America, since it essentially died in Japan. There is a strong possibility that it will be the next 3DO.

My brother, Tank, has picked up an Gamecube. I'll tell y'all what it's like when I go back to uni. If it is really good, and I see games that I like on the horizon, I might consider getting one to sit next to/ on top of my PS2.

It is far from even that close. A PC that will run it won't be out for a few more years at least. Expect a PS2 emulator capable of playing a few commercial games in about 2 years. Expect a GOOD PS2 emulator in about 3 or 4 years.

If you want to know how the GameCube is, then read my post, which was posted two posts before the first of yours.

Also, the edit button is here so you can click on it, not just for show.

Commercial gamecube's dont have a dvd player, although you can buy the customized edition made by panasonic which has a dvd player but bear in mind, it's more expensive ..

I made a mistake there. I meant that if you buy a PS2 you'll get a DVD player for free. Same goes for XBOX but XBOX has other issues so I won't advise you to buy XBOX. Gamecube is a moderate console, well balanced b/w XBOX and PS2 (when we talk games it goes HTH with PS2 and when it comes to hardware it goes HTH with XBOX) but you are not going to get a DVD player though.
I would have bought a gamecube but I bought PS2 cos of its present games (MGS2, GT3, GTA3, SD JBI) and the availability of its games in my country. Gamecube has no future in my country.

I am constantly astounded by how many CARE about a DVD player on your console. I have absolutely NO desire to play a DVD in my console. It's not like you are getting a high end DVD player when you buy an XBox or a PS2. In fact, the DVD playback is subpar. I buy a console to play games, and that's why I bought a GameCube. The PS2 does have some good games at the moment, I will give it that. However, I see no future in the PS2, which is why I bought a GameCube. I can easily name off 10 games coming for GameCube in the near future which I am very enthused about. I can name about 3 games for PS2 that I want at the moment, and about 2 in the future. There's just no competition there.

Hell yeah I care... I wish I could afford to buy a console AND a dvd drive... haha, unfortunately I can't afford either - hence I have no new consoles (most recent console I own is a PSX) and only a CD Rom drive... not even a burner.

BUT! in the hypothetical and completely unfathomable case where I DID have money, I might as well buy one thing that can do both... and even if it's a crappy DVD player, in the event that I had a ps2, it would be hooked to the TV in the living room for me and my roommates to share and bask in the DVD goodness... But let's get back to reality, um... shall we...

X-Box users have to pay a further £30 or so you a remote (what a joke)
I'm not fussed about consoles playing DVDs: My PC plays them much better in Dolby 5.1 Thank you very much. I'd have liked it if I had the option to purchase a version of the PS2 without DVD playback taht would cost $50 less.

What if you don't have a DVD rom? Are you gonna buy it just for movies? Watch it on a 17" monitor?
How about a PS2?

The PS2 DVD quality is laughable. The dialog doesn't seem to stay in sync with the picture, the picture quality is poorer than the cinemaster soft player was on my old K6-2 350 w/ Voodoo 3, and the most annoying is that it can't change from anything but 16:9 ratio: It has no letterbox or Pan/Scan options.
Some of us also have bigger monitors than TVs (Myself being an example. 19" TV, 22" monitor).
I would rather have had the option of buying a PS2 without DVD playback than have that.

But that's the thing. You ARE paying for the DVD capabilities on the PS2. A PS2 costs $100 more than a GameCube. You can EASILY get a DVD-Rom for that much. If you have a decent TV, you can get a cheap DVD player for $100 that can FAR outperform a PS2's DVD playback. I just see no reason for playing DVDs on a console.

If the DVD playback was good (and the PS2's is not by any means), it would be fine to make it a mandatory charge. Thinking that a PS2 is an adequate replacement for a REAL DVD player (whether it's a standalone unit or a DVD-ROM drive) is not a good idea. Superior DVD drives are cheaper every day, and that isn't a good reason to go for a PS2 (heck, if you're going to use reasoning like that, the Xbox would likely be a better choice).

But still, if you want a better investment go for the ps2 . I dont think ppl will shell out their money for a ps2 solely for the purpose of playing dvd movies. Game wise the ps2 has a better future than the gamecube and x-box combined

Now that is something that I will disagree with. Most games coming for the PS2 will be ported to other systems, such as the GameCube. However, Nintendo has AWESOME 1st and 2nd party support for their system. Only on GameCube can you find a lot of the most popular games. Keep in mind that Nintendo and Rare almost singlehandedly kept the N64 alive. It is a very different story with the GameCube. GameCube has MASSIVE 3rd party support. I am predicting that most games made for PS2 will still be ported to GameCube on general principles. The trend is definately starting to show itself, now that GameCube is starting to make itself known.

I just hope that everyone agrees that the Xbox has no future. Hell, even Age of Empires is being ported to PS2. (That just blows my mind. Who would want to play it on a console in the first place?)
