Question i need help intalling roms in mame

hey guys
sry if this is in the wrong place its my 1st time here

i recently downloaded mame32 for my pc, on windows xp, and im having a lot of trouble getting roms to work.

according to the help file, i download the rom, keep it zipped, and put it in the rom folder when i downloaded it.

first it wasnt working. but then when i ran the program, I noticed this little category beside the name on the main menu that says DIRECTORY. so i made a folder with the same name as that, and put the rom inside that folder, in the rom folder; and it still isnt working!! :cuss2:

what am i doing wrong? also im kind of a n00b at this so no hi tech language plz :P

thanks

make sure your rom folder its set correctly in mame32, it should appear green or red next to the name of the game (black means you dont have the game) but you do just need the zip file in the rom folder, no directories within

yes i thought of that also. my general rom directory is now set to where it actually is, but the games all still show up black. WTF?!??!

i think the way its working is that all the games that are on the list already are the ones i can play, but theyre all black cuz my rom directory is empty.

but i saw one on the list i liked and i downloaded the rom for it and put it in the rom directory, but no matter what i try i cant get it to turn...not black...

ne1? cmon i need help

Whats the status on the legality of the distribution of mame roms anyways? You can't exactly dump them yourself and its extremely unlikely you own the original machine. Its interesting.

Note: This post wasn't made in countering (((adam))), the thread just made me think about it.

According to Mame's own faq:
Quote:
G06. Is MAME illegal?

No. Emulating another platform, in itself, is NOT illegal. It is NOT illegal to have MAME on your computer, on your website, or to give it to friends.

ROM images are a different matter. Many ROM sites have been politely contacted by ROM copyright-owners and asked to take images offline. At the time of this writing, however, no site has been LEGALLY shut down, or prosecuted.

There are a few clear precedents about ROMs' legality: Capcom has licensed some of its classic ROMs to be bundled with Hanaho's HotRod Joystick control panel. By buying one, you can have some absolutely legal ROMs. There is also now a service which sells licenses to possess and use ROMs, called StarROMs. They offer a legal way to have ROMs for some of the games supported by MAME, and hopefully more services like this will appear in the future.

Possessing ROM images of circuit boards you do not own may constitute a copyright violation, much like copying a friend's game or audio CD rather than buying it. This is still a legal gray area; possession of such ROMs will not necessarily lead to legal prosecution. In any case, you are responsible for your own actions. No one connected with the MAME project is responsible if you get in trouble.
lol

there are a lot of commercial roms which arent legal to use. but there are quite a few freeware roms available for use, unless i have reason to suspect otherwise, i will presume he is using the freeware roms

Only other advice i can give is make sure your video settings are correct, it sounds like there is a miss configuration somewhere

Did you refresh (F5) the gamelist after placing the roms into the appropriate folder? Not that they wouldn't work, but they would be displayed as "unavailable" in the browser. Other possibility, you have a bunch of clone roms without the parent sets. In either case, I suggest you fully read this site.

Green means Go!

As in its good to go just double click and your off.

What version of Mame32 do you have anyway cause if it still isn't working an out-of-date emu could be your problem!
