ZNES: 2-player only or 4-player support after all?
Hi, Before I tried ZNES, i've always used Snes9x. Snes9x supports 4 players when the multi-tap option is enabled, but the netcode isn't really good which causes a good amount of lag, even when the max. frameskip is set to 0. So I then tried ZNES with a friend and we tried "Smash TV". It ran remarkably smooth, much smoother then Snes9x. I'd say there was no lag at all! I invited 2 more and set upped a game of "Super Bomberman 2". ZNES however only let's 1 player connect. For this player a chatwindow appears and I can communicate with him. The others get a message saying "Connection succesful", but the chatwindow doesn't appear! I did this with "Allow UDP connection" disabled, since this is the only way I can host a game succesfully. It seems that the other 2 players are there, but they just can't join the game somehow. Does this have to do with UDP? Can anyone confirm if ZNES supports 4 player netplay and if so, do you have any suggestions for my problem? Thnx in advance. |

ZSNES does not have 4-player netplay support. Pagefault, the main coder, added 3-player support and had it working well, but it isn't in the CVS - hense is not in a WIP build. Currently it's two player only. If you haven't heard of zbattle.net, then go get it at (surprisingly enough) http://www.zbattle.net - it's a frontend for netplay. Snes9x netplay is known to be as buggy as hell. It's even possible to play completely different games with Snes9x Netplay since it doesn't check if the roms are the same. |

Could you tell me the meaning of CVS? I guess i'll have to use Snes9x for now then. Btw, do you have any idea how high the developement priority is for 3- or 4player support? Thnx for the information. |

Concurrent Versions System. Basically the source code is downloadable on the internet, and the authors can make commits to it with modified code, and people can download it and compile it to have the 'latest version'. The netplay code has not been commited to the CVS (you could say that it's still on Pagefault's hard drive, heh) since it has yet to be finished from what I understand. I guess the 3+ Netplay is fairly low priority right now, but that's much better than it was not too long ago when it was thought that 3+ netplay wasn't possible with ZSNES's implementation (which it now is). |
