What, exactly, is an "overdumped" ROM?

I've recently got back into SNES/GBA emulation, and during one of my recent searches for ROMs, I've ran into the term "Overdumped ROM" on various sites. Not knowing what such a thing is, it naturally got my curiousity.

To me, it doesn't quite make sense. It sounds like an overdumped ROM would mean that somehow they dumped more than 100% of a ROM to make an image file, but that doesn't make sense because where would the extra stuff come from? I mean, once you dump it all, there would be nothing left to dump to an image, right?

you just answered your own question

Overdumping is usually caused by incorrectly dumping the rom in the first place. Try this place, it should help you in cleaning those games

Kirby would have closed this thread if it was illegal.

I guess I did, didn't I? Thanks for the link, it does shed some light on things. Now, while I don't consider the possibility of my rom collection being overdumped as a serious issue, it's always nice to reclaim needlessly wasted disk space.

Of course, that site doesn't answer everything in the first place, or explanation of what these "distintive features" are that the site claims that overdumped ROMs have. Darn this scientific curiousity that phrase has piqued.

Thoughtless, you can rest assured that I'm not trying to ask for ROMs, nor am I giving out links to where they are; neither am I trying to post anything else that would be against the board's rules in regards to ROMs.

Yes, discussions about ROMs tend to walk the line between being legitimate questions and outright violations of the boards rules, but I don't think I've crossed that line as long as this doesn't stray too far from being a question of terminology.

And I agree with ShadowDancer, if a mod thought I had already crossed that line, it would have been locked already.

-edit-
I jumped to conclusions regarding kirby's link. It does give me an answer, just not an in-depth, scientific over-analyzation of what an overdumped ROM is.

I think you are wrong his asking for explanation not asking where to find Roms. So read the rulez before asking to others to close.

Read properly, he is not asking anyone to close the thread.
