Best MAME emulator?

What is the best MAME emulator available. I mean, which has best compatibility/speed and if possible it has screen filtering. (2xsai, eagle or anything similar. Probaply OpenGL support and such)

Thanks! Long time ago i played game Space Wars (the first game ever developed!) with my friends 8088. I had a feeling i must play it again, but found arcade version instead. I guess i will start trying old MAME games now. NES is already too played-thru. I have no experience on MAME emulation, so i feel kinda n00b again.

"Best MAME derivative," would have made more sense.

Derivative builds should have the same compatibility and speed as the baseline MAME, but there are no absolutes. If you use a hacked-up build, you deal with its idiosyncrasies. Personally, I like MAME32plus.

In lamen terms. Mame is open source. Anyone can code and compile their own version of Mame. This is why there are so many versions of mame. But since people can compile their own version, they can have their own bugs/options/attributes that is different from the original mame. In my experience though, most of the mame derivatives are not much more or less compatible or different from the original.

There are some hacked versions of mame floating around that may be less stable and compatible though. I just like Mame32k because of it's online capabilities.
