More about PHANTOM

The announcement of the development of the Phantom games console was one of the most debated stories of 2003, with industry experts describing it in a variety of ways. Some suggested the console was vaporware, or an elaborate hoax, while others praised the proposed economic model but doubted that the company could last long enough to see profitability.

The debate is about to reach its climax, as Infinium Labs, the console's creators, are about to demonstrate the Phantom Gaming Service and silence the voices of those who doubt its existence.

Infinium Labs announced today that its Phantom Gaming Service will be unveiled to the public January 8-11 at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Nevada.

We’re very excited to be showing the Phantom Gaming Service for the first time at North America's largest tradeshow, said Timothy M. Roberts, CEO of Infinium Labs. This show gives us the unique opportunity to present the Phantom firsthand to both consumers and industry insiders.

The Phantom Gaming Service will be a featured product at the Microsoft Windows Embedded Device Showcase exhibit in the Las Vegas Convention Center. Infinium Labs is licensed by Microsoft Licensing, GP to use Windows XP Embedded for operating system components of the Phantom Gaming Service.

The Phantom Gaming Service also will be featured in a hospitality suite on the 7th floor of an office building at 101 Convention Center Drive, just half a block from the Las Vegas Convention Center, and at a penthouse suite at the Palms Casino Hotel.

CES attendees can catch a glimpse of the Phantom at a special gaming session, SS2 Next–Generation Gaming Console, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 8, at the LVCC North Hall N254. Robert Shambro, Executive Vice President of Strategy and Co-founder of Infinium Labs, will be a panel participant.

The Phantom Game Service is a next-generation gaming system that supports games on-demand, game rentals, game demos, seamless upgrades and patch management. At launch, the Phantom will be the fastest, most powerful gaming system on the market and will include a broad selection of pre-loaded games, on-demand games and game rentals.

The Phantom Gaming Service is an always-on broadband device, which will allow gamers a wealth of options, from wireless connectivity to massive multiplayer capabilities, allowing gamers to demo games before purchasing or subscribing. For a better look at the rear panel of the Phantom and its connectors follow the screens tab above.

The HD better be like 200gig at least. Imagine, buying games tnd then the connsole telling you to delete some to buy more. Sheesh. I wonder though if they have the game support and the money to push the console onto a "big 5" type of console market. I mean microsoft could afford to advertise it enough to mak people want to buy, and they got lucky on a few games which brought in major thirdparty support. Can Infinium really do this?

When you purchas a game you can re-download it, I read about this console a few months ago. I think it will be a flop, like the jaguar, too advanced for its time, but I think this is the future of consoles. And I don't think the HDD is that big, just enough to install the game. You can install a few games, but ultimatley you will have to delelte some. When you buy the game your account documents it so if you decide you want to play the game you just have to re install it.

I agree with Valcrist...... you have to notice as well that this is a broadband device, so they'll miss a very big market on thse countries where broadband or better is impossible to attain (like Latin America).... yeah, it is too advanced for our time...

of course it would he pirateable via hacking in the phantom servers (to make them think I've already paid for the games and that i can download them)

see?..... it is not that advanced... I already suggested a way in which piracy would be possible

I totally disagree rei... anything can be pirated, you know that because where we life is already a proof of it

but it is still possible for some hackers and pirateer to do this, when Microsoft said that WinXP is totally hackproof, they ate their own words...

Just read my previous post and you'll see the Phantom is not pirateable...... actually it is even more pirateable than any other console ... it will be easy for it to turn into another Diablo II closed server (before the rust storm, that is )

Well, if you have to delete a game, then re-download it some time later; that would be a huge download for a broadband connection. They better have some damn good servers that can push 200kb/s at least, all the time.

Another way I can think to pirate on the Phantom would be to get a game using one Phantom, find a way to dump the info (shouldn't be too hard, the Phantom is supposed to be as similar to a PC as the Xbox is) and get that from the PC onto another Phantom.

Infinium Labs can use whatever protection they want, but this will be possible pretty quickly.

copying the game from a phantom console to the PC then to another phantom console

since its functioning like a PC maybe making a simple software that skips the protection and piracy wins again...

I think I remember reading somewhere that it can run PC games...I'll have to see if I can find that again, I may be wrong.

if this thing is going to be unveiled any day now, why are they still using a 3D image?
unless they are looking for a few more "investors"!!
an actual photo of the thing would have me and a few others a bit more convinced.
but you never know i could be proved wrong, right after sony drop the price of a PS2 to 10p!

but one thing more even you store the game on your PCs HDD the phantom console is required to be connected all the time when your playing... they can easily attach an individual serial key in their games so that it COULD stall piracy for abit... (like in the Gamecube... smaller CD)
