Re: Does the XBox have an OS?

Well the BIOS would be closest to what would be an OS. Also if your xbox is modded you can change the look of it. I think it's called EvolutionX

Re: Does the XBox have an OS?

Is the OS on the Hard Drive or on some form of Flash ROM?

Re: Does the XBox have an OS?

Well some people just switch that small XBOX hardrive for a larger capacity one so I would think its on some sorta flash ROM.

Oh I didn't know they didn't have a BIOS. You could always ask Caustik.

Re: Does the XBox have an OS?

i was just curious because if it was an OS on hte HardDrive I didnt see why anyone didnt try to boot that OS on a PC. Hacking that OS (I know its probably impossible) to make it work with our PC's could of been a nice emulator. But then again that is really illegal

Re: Does the XBox have an OS?

Xbox OS is on the HD, When you switch the HD for a larger you have to copy the OS over onto it. Also The XBOX DOES have a bios. What do you think the Mod chips Bypass??...lol

Re: Does the XBox have an OS?

yes xbox has a bios. modchips bypass that with a custom bios. Also yes, they have an o.s based on the win NT kernel, a side earlier in the thread.

fitting a bigger hdd is as easy as copying the files from the old drive to the new drive.

The cable the XBox HDD uses probably isn't your typical ATA cable. I dont know though.

I think it is. How else would people be buying bigger hdd's if the xbox used something unique?

IIRC maxtor drives are the most compatible. The xbox also uses cable select and not master/slave etc...

Re: Does the XBox have an OS?

XBOX does have a BIOS, that's what it boots from. From there, BIOS loads kernal.

XBOX does have a standard ATA cable, 66 if I recall correctly.

hmm....i think it uses a slightly different cord. or else every tom, dick, and harry would be installing a new HDD.

on a side note, you have to lock your hard drive, which is why people use Maxtors the most (they can mostly do it)

Well thats real smart That goes to show how smart M$ really is. I figured it would be like the ps2 hdd which will use a proprietary cable. If you pop of the expansion bay cover on the back you'll see what I'm talking about.

Re: Does the XBox have an OS?

PS2 has tons of weird proprietary stuff.

well the microsoft HD cable is ATA and the power cord is standard but IIRC they have different connectors. kind of like how the controllers are USB but different connectors

Re: Does the XBox have an OS?

you can connect the xbox hard drive to your pc, and the pc will detect it as a hard drive, but it cant read the file system. You need a special program for that. In order to get it so the bios detects the hard drive, you have to "hotswap" the hard drive while the xbox is on. It's not as risky as it sounds. If you time it correctly, you can swap the hard drive to your pc while it's not locked, then use a program to edit/change files around on it. This method is used as a mod-free solution to run unsigned code on your xbox. search google for more info.
