Is the Sega CD an 8 bit system? The graphics look so interior to the SNES.

it was 16-bit. the snes was simply able to produce more colours, but the genesis was faster; a good example of this is Lethal Enforcers, a shooting game by konami. The snes version has much more colors but it misses a lot of animation, were the genesis had lack of colors, but was much smoother. |

Both the SEga genesis and sega cd addon were 16bit.. The sega genesis and sega cd both had 68000 processors, but the 68000 in the sega cd ran at 12 mhz while the genesis 68000 cpu ran at 7 mhz.. The sega cd also had hardware sprite and plane rotation and scaling.. The genesis did rotation and scaling through software.. Sega cd could also display more colors onscreen than the genesis alone.. In comparison, the SNES cpu ran at 3.25 mhz..

Ah, I loved the SegaCD, it had some great games out for it, wished some of them had a remake, like Vay and all the other great rpgs that were on there that never had a chance to get a remake, glad the Lunar games did though.

I did my own research to find out why the Sega CD graphics looks so cr@ppy to the SNES: Sega CD CPU Speed: 12.7 MHz COLOR Maximum colors on one screen: 64 Total colors available: 512 RESOLUTION Maximum screen resolution: 320 x 224 SPRITES Maximum Sprites: 80 Maximum Sprite size: 32 x 32 SNES CPU Speed: 1.79, 2.68 and 3.58 Mhz COLOR Maximum colors on one screen: 256 Total colors available: 32,678 RESOLUTION Maximum screen resolution: 512x448 SPRITES Maximum Sprites: 128 Maximum Sprite size: 64x64 As you can see the Sega CD had a better CPU speed, but the graphic capabilities are inferior to the SNES. BTW, I got the info here and here.

Specs don't matter much.. It's always been the games.. The snes can produce better graphics, but it was plagued with slowdowns when it's games got too graphic intensive.. More so than the faster genesis or sega cd.. Plus, I've seen games on the genesis and sega cd that rivals anything on the snes.. I had both systems when I was younger and I like my genesis and sega cd more.. Treasure games were just too fun.. And the Sega 6 button pad was the best console gamepad of the time.. Oh and one more thing.. Streets of Rage 2 blew away all other beat em ups in the 16 bit era..

The SNES specs listed are misleading, they offer the maximum possible out of any modes. Most modes don't offer 256 colors, and very few games used 512x224/240 (and only a couple used 512x448/480 because it was interlaced and thus flickered)... instead 256x224/240 was common while on Genesis 320x224/240 was common, so Genesis usually had more resolution. The SNES's main graphical advantages were a more expansive range of colors to use in the palette and color addition/subtraction modes. And hardware scaling/rotation. When compared side to side the real area SNES shined in over Genesis was in sound. Of course on Sega CD most games used CD-DA tracks so that's not much of an issue there. - Exo |

Interestingly, apparently the SNES CPU was 8-bit.
