Well.. There is a mame dos.. But you would need win98se to run it properly.. It may run faster if you run it in ms dos mode without loading into windows.. The other new mame versions are actually win32 apps so they can run in winxp.. These new mame versions are all run from the command line... You have to open up a command prompt.. And use the commands listed in the documents to run games and get help with mame.. If your not adept at using command lines then wait for mame32..

MAME DOS (and everything DOS) runs awesome here, perfect screen sync (one of the few times the nvidia card actually does that right), making it run very smooth.

New games supported:
--------------------

Gun Force 2 [Chris Hardy]
Angel Kids [David Haywood]
Noboranka [Stephane Humbert]
Steel Force [David Haywood, Stephan Humbert]
Mug Smashers [David Haywood, Stephan Humbert]
Captain America [Bryan McPhail]
Lemmings [Bryan McPhail]
Flyball [Stefan Jokisch]
Grand Cross [David Graves]

New clones supported:
---------------------

Mayday (set 3)
Alpha One (prototype of Major Havoc)
Blaster (kit)
Buck Rogers (encrypted)

Mad> a k6-2 500 is a bit slow for MAME nowadays.
You could always download an older version to play certain games faster. I think MAME 0.36 should run pretty fast. Of course it's less accurate and supports less games, but it might work good for you.

MAME's DOS port doesn't get any maintenence nowadays and there are bugs popping up in each new release, so don't count on it forever.

Not to mention Aaron Giles' ASM blitter for MAME's windows port is wicked fast.

oh, even though it runs smooth, I'd probably pick the windows version nowadays for convenience ..or use both.

it's been a while since I last installed mame , I'll admit. I reinstall too much :o

Get the PPro recompile!

Definitely get the Pentium Pro optimized recompile if you have a Pentium Pro, Pentium II, or a Pentium III. I think Athlons get a boost to from this recompiled binary since they execute PPro optimized code well. I'm not sure about the Pentium 4 though. They're availible on the Mame website.
