Hi.

As you can see, I got them AND tried them all (All 88 windows version):

There are 2-3 more challenging games that I use to test emulators, but nothing comes close to demos made for the NES to separate the men from the boys. Those are tricky Biatch and often use rogue coding usually more difficult to emulate. There is one called "High hopes" that very few emulator can run at all or at least, run right (requires PAL mode). Try it, it's great! high hopes by aspekt
There 's also the Demo "Quantum disco brothers" that very few emulator runs as it should Quantum Disco Brothers by wamma

My pick for BEST NES emulator:

1- Nestopia V1.40: Best compatibility, great set of functions; Game Genie, VS system, Famicom disk system, NSF song player, IPS patch, audio/video recording, netplay etc... Best overall. http://sourceforge.net/projects/nest...n.zip/download
2- FCEUX V2.1.1 of July 29 2009, Great compatibility. Good complement to Nestopia FCEUX: cross-platform NES emulation for professionals. Replacement for the now dead FCE Ultra.
3- Sega li V1.11.3: Very small (623Kb total), fast, good compatibility, no fuss. NES on the go. http://hap.samor.nl/

Special mention: Nemulator; The only NES emulator requiring Vista/7 DX10!! nemulator I mention it not because it is good, just because its the first DX10 NES emulator!

I question some of the choices already submitted... The initial request was: What is the BEST emulator, not what are you using...

RockNESx? It's a cheap port. The name is RockNES (no X) in the latest version (5.02). The interface pisses me off.
FCEUltra? DEAD. FCEUX officially replaced it.
Nesticle? Last update in 1997... The V0.42 executable name is NESTCL95.EXE !! Freaking proprietary interface...
NesterJ?: Not bad, but the NNNesterJ V 0.23 version is much more complete.
VirtuaNES? Games OK, demos not so good. Overall average, even the pre-alpha Version 2. VirtuaNES Official Site
SNES/Znes?? ZNES is a SNES emulator! It can't play NES ROM!!
Jnes? Small, fast, play practically all games. Don't run both mentioned demo right...
NEsten? Come on...
M-nes from Mudlord? Nope. The name is actually MuNES. It was made for the 2008 Retroemu competition. Pure C++, only 47.5KB and NOTHING else... It's the equivalent of a software paper weight...

Every NES emulator I use experiences drastic slowdowns when playing Metroid. (when shooting longbeam in certain rooms.)

Wow dude. Your computer really sucks.

Nah. It's just that the NES emus (that I'm aware of) are cycle accurate, so basically, if slowdown would occur on the original hardware, it'll slow down the emu as well.

Thumbs down

I don't have an NES (do they even sell those anymore?) or any NES games, but I find it pretty sad that my PC can run N64, and some gamecube games faster than NES. 2.8 ghz CPU, 3 GB RAM, GeForce 8800. Pathetic that every emulator I try runs like a dog or wont even run fullscreen without crashing.

Oh I understand completely, I just don't believe you. I highly doubt the original Metroid encountered a 20 frames per second speed loss everytime the player fired the longbeam.

I personally use nestopia, but before i found it i used NNNesterJ 0.23, and before that nesticle. nestopia plays vs system games with dip-swich settings, and also can play the nintendo world championships 1990 very well - it even has an on screen timer option for nwc 1990. BTW when was NNNesterJ last updated?
