Well, ds emulation is very advanced.
DESMUME, IDEAS, NO$GBA and NEONDS can run commercial games, take a look at the screenshots, you will realize how far DS emulation has gone in a such little time.

For 2D and 3D games i recommend you iDeaS and No$gba

For 2D games i recommend you NeonDS and Desmume(though desmume have some 3D too)

some information

iDeaS: have sound and good speed

No$gba: have sound, microphone support and preliminary wifi speed depends which game you wanna play

Desmume: have sound and speed depends like no$gba

NeonDS: don't have sound and exelent speed

Be aware that their performance also depends on your PC jonc.

ideas is the worst in a way since it is not comparable with most computers despite you have brand name which can make it go at 2fps on a Pentium D 3.2Ghz pc.

Desmume you can save anywhere and plays many games like megaman (2d game) with good speed which idea and no$gba can not do that.

If you had to pick one for now it would be no$gba since that one is considered ahead and plays more games... for now.

2fps?.. LOL, I definitely test each version of iDeaS that comes out on both my desktop and laptop PCs. My desktop PC is quite crappy, I admit - it's just P4 2.6Ghz (old single-core one) / 1024MB RAM / GF6600 256MB - but even this crappy desktop can handle most 2D and even 3D games I have in iDeaS far above 2fps For instance, "Tetris DS" goes at 28-35fps with frameskip disabled, 39-43fps with frameskip enabled ("auto"). "New Super Mario Bros" shows 13-25fps with frameskip disabled, 25-30fps with frameskip enabled ("auto"). My laptop, which is far better (Core 2 Duo T5600 / 1024MB / GF7600 256MB) mostly shows 45-60fps in most games that I have. So, I think it must be something with your PC.

Basically everyone has to keep in mind that iDeaS, as well as any other emulator, is still under heavy development - so you just have to be patient and wait for the future versions for better speed and compatibility. You can always play these games on your real DS in the meantime.

My $0.02 on the ds emulation progress: I'd say that no$gba is the fastest emulator right now and also shows decent 3D compatibility; iDeaS is second best and progresses very nicely; DeSmuME has arguably the nicest sound support and shows good 2D compatibility, but doesn't have as good 3D support yet but I think this may change in one of the future builds; NeonDS is very fast in 2D but has no 3D support yet. All emulators are in development right now, so we are in no position to be unhappy about them - let's just wait and see what will happen in the next few months. As it goes right now, virtually every new release has some kind of a breakthrough in it, featuring better compatibility and sometimes higher speed. The speed, as I understand, is not the top priority right now, because the DS emulators haven't yet reached the necessary level of compatibility in order to be optimized. I may be wrong here, but that's how I see it.

iDeaS has some advantages of no$gba in the 3D department, but no$gba has has similar advantages over iDeaS. For instance the game Trace Memory can better be played on iDeaS as it has slightly better 3D support for it (water can be seen, handle can be seen etc.) however in the game Tenchu Dark Secret iDeaS is not able to show any of the background and renders it unplayable, but on no$gba the game can be played and that part is visible.
Then again on Transformers the emulators are pretty much identically bad.
Some of the typical racing games are also slightly better on iDeaS, more of the actual track can be seen, but they are still unplayable.

no$gba is still faster most of the time though, but iDeaS aint too far behind and for some games even slightly ahead.

no$gba is still the better of the two slightly as it's much smoother for some games, but I am finding myself turning more and more to iDeaS if I want to play something. It used to be test iDeaS but then play everything on no$gba, now I have a few I only play on iDeaS and some I only play on no$gba (mainly 2D GBAish games).
Unfortunately DeSmuME's speed and 3D (or rather lack thereof) stop me from playing with it much.
The only thing stopping me from using iDeaS fulltime over no$gba is that it's impossible for me to get perfect sound and speed (basically smoothness) out of iDeaS, which I can however get from no$gba for some games.

ive tested all four emulators and i'd say that iDeaS and no$gba are equal except they both have 1 or 2 things they specialise in.

I prefer no$gba and NeonDS as well for three reasons:

Joystick supporting
2-D games are excellents in speed for NeonDS
3-D games are good/excellents in some speed for no$gba

I feel very comfortable with them. By the way, I hate keyboard. I still get used to the keyboard but still hate it anyway.

well i prefer NeonDS,iDeaS,No$gba and if i feel lazy i test Desmume for those reasons

NeonDS insane speed and Nice 2D and 3D

iDeaS exelent speed, sound and Nice 2D and 3D

No$gba nice speed sound more or less and Nice 2D and 3D (some transparent bugs:P)

Desmume good 2D and 3D but i read they gonna make some speed up progress

Why are people saying iDeaS is faster than no$gba? Is that a mistake? - on my computer no$gba runs fine (60fps) without any frameskipping but iDeaS only runs at 40-50 fps...
