Some english people feel the need to play Japanese titles even if they can't understand a thing.

Some japanese games need to be played even if you can't understand at all.

Not this case, though.

Some Japanese games are playable without understanding Japanese yes, that's true........but you don't get half as much enjoyment out of it as if you understood everything so I think anybody that does play a japanese game instead of the language they understand is cheating themselves.

O well I would rather not play a game, than be bummed cuz I have no clue what's going on in the game I am playing even if I can understand all the gameplay elements perfectly and play it well.

I suppose it's not as bad with platformers or arcade style games, but RPG's suck if you can't understand them.

I played Megaman Battle Network 4 in Japanese once and it killed the game for me. Because you can't understand what's being said you continuously have to guess what's going on and what you have to do. So you go to the same places dozens of times thinking it may be here or there and get insanely annoyed and bored with the game. By the time the english version came out I was completely over it and hated the game...I hardly played much further than I got in the jap version and it was such a boring missing to even get that far.
I had also started playing pokemon Ruby in Japanese but luckily remembered my bad playing experience with MMBN4 and therefore stopped before I got too far and I still enjoyed the english version when I got it.

Using a translation guide or FAQ is also not much better, because it spoils puzzles and others stuff beforehand.

I would rather not play a good game which I can't fully understand, than hate it because of the mission it was to play it and all the guesswork that had to be done.

Battle Network 4 wasn't that good of a game anyway.
Half of the game being tournaments kinda killed it. :/

I should probably learn Japanese XD...2 problems though...1 there are no Japanese classes anywhere in my province even that I know of (if not the whole country) ... and 2 my parents dont know that I watch anime and read (translated) manga and they are not very supportive of the stuff and in fact of all things japanese (besides cars and tech toys) and would therefore never allow me to learn japanese even if there were classes somewhere.

It's also a very hard language...apparently there are two types of alphabet, but not only that they also make characters for certain words instead of using the character's needed to write that word...then there's knowing japanese with the western alphabet and with japanese characters....also whenever you listen to an anime themesong and watch the text below it, they sometime say something as like two words, which is a whole sentence onscreen.

I am afraid there's just too much preventing me from undertaking this daunting task.

there are:
  • Hiragana
  • Katakana (Commonly used for international words like for example EXPLOSION > エクスプロージョン - E KU SU PU ROO JI YO N)

And the last is very hard to non native Japanese speakers...

  • Kanji (Believe me, there are a lot of them and can have more than ONE meaning...)

    Example:
    (ご - GO)
Meanings: word, speech, language, narration, to speak

Some japanese games are superior to the english releases too. Castlevania comes to mind, especially symphony of the night, which had the usa/eur releases butchered pretty badly.

On a ds Dawn of Sorrow also got some stuff cut out and removed for the usa and eur versions.

Too violent for the Censors board more like....not generally too violent for americans, they have an insane censors board which ruins a lot of things and sometimes make it seem weirder than it originally was.....

I don't get how they have to censor blood out of Japanese anime or games, but it's perfectly fine for an american game company to make something like FEAR or the GTA series....and just about every action movie has blood all over the place and at least one person dies in a horrible way.

They should stop censoring stuff and instead slap their beloved T (teen) or M (mature) labels on...that should be good enough.

Of course europeans are not much better.
