It is bad memory management in the game, there was a large thread a month ago about it. The emu can play it, but not efficantly. Just be glad the speed is improved from the last version. This game seems to be built pretty complex so going to be a while for it to run at a normal speed without killing your ram.
On my system, it will sponge about 2.3gb of ram before the white screen then drop about 500mb of ram. Also, don't count on the save states and rooms working 100% of the time. Best to use both for when one way of saving doesn't work. With patience, the game can be completed. Also, turn off the music to help it play better.

It would be a better idea to ask stuff like that in PM considering it comes from his sig....it may also not have been iDeaS..it may have been no$gba...just ask in PMs.

kis, try and completely remove the ideas directory and the rom (if your using one) then get them both again. The older version of ideas corrupted a rom on me to the point of being unable to use it. And make sure it is unzipped. Then it should work, turn off sound also for better stability.

I'm only stating what happened to me, I think when the older version of ideas (1.0.5) would crash, it caused the file corruption. Any number of problems can occur when a program doesn't close properly. I highly doubt it is a virus related problem as this happened 2 months ago and no problems ever since. I deleted the folder with the roms and old saves and downloaded them both again, no more problems. I'm assuming what ever caused the file corruption was fixed, even if it was and unknown problem. So that is why I suggested deleting both and getting fresh copies of both again, it see if this problem still exists.
I was able to complete the game in 1.0.6. In 1.0.8 I'll probably come back to it and see what is all improved. Desume won't load the graphics for the lost village. I'm able to get the beginning where you fight the three monsters in the city and even that is a mess. The title screen in desume doesn't show anything, but you can still click on the options if you can find them...

Well, how come it stopped working when ideas crashed? It crashed when I tried to equip items, a known point in the game that would cause ideas 1.0.5 to crash.
Is it not possible for a file to be corrupted if it is being read from and the program reading it crashes?

This has happened with other emu's in the past for me. It is rare, maybe this is the 4th or 5th time ever out of 8 or so years that I've used emulation. Look at the date I created my user account and lack of posts, though most of that was forgetting the url of this site lol. When it has happened, it was after an improper shutdown of the emu or both the emu and OS (though the last emu that took out the OS on me was a win98).
I don't know at all if was the emu, or if it is more related to windows. All I know is sometimes they get hosed on me and gotta get a new copy. Instead of wasteing time to figure out how it got corrupted, I've just gotten another copy and see if it happen again, which so far the same rom never got corrupted twice. I've come to adopt a method of backing up the rom for when it does get hosed one way or the other. This has been a rare occurance and ideas has gone threw plenty of improper shutdowns using castlevania. I'd say that out of maybe 100 total improper shutdowns, only once did the rom end up corrupted. I've had from roms from NES, SNES, game boys, up to DS get corrupted. The rom was downloaded in a zip file that is stored in a different folder. In this case, all I did was delete the whole ideas directory. Unzipped the new version of ideas and the original rom file. Currently a copy of the original rom image works. So we can rule out that the original rom file was corrupted. I'm not going to argue any more for it is not worth any more of my time. This is what happened to me and what I did to resolve the issue. My system has no malware and is not corrupted or throwing constant errors of missing or corrupt windows components. My current OS is windows xp pro Sp2. It also usually takes less then a minute to boot from POST (rarely get to see the welcome screen of windows) so can't even rule a slow older system. In the future, if a rom image ever becomes corrupted on me again. Before deleting it, I'll offer a copy for analysis to anyone who wants to look at it. Though like I've said above, it is rare and can be a long time before it happens again. No hard feelings on this at my end, just different viewpoints. And a hell of a mountain formed from a small mole hill.
