pokemon help please

well i got my friend to give this to me and it took me awhile to figure out how to get pasted the part where it like freezes after the first battle. i figured that out but now it can't press start on the game. no matter what button i assign it to it wont open up the menu-where i can save look at my items and what not?

this problem also goes along with pretty much anything except up, down, left, right, and x and b button
am i doing something wrong
