The everyday GPU or 3D rendering GPU?
Like the title says, which one? I've got a friend who works a lot with heavy apps like AutoCAD, Artlantis, 3D Studio Max etc... I don't know too much on the 3D rendering specific cards myself, so though I'd ask for some opinions. He doesn't game too much, and if he needs to, he's got a $2500 laptop that
.Cheers!

Laptop? Dedicated 3D rendering card? It doesn't seem to match. There's the FireGL and Quadro video cards, but I remember them being desktop type rathan than laptop type. So I would suggest a desktop. For a laptop. There's very little choice it seems.

Ah, sorry, let me be a bit more clear. He already has a kick ass laptop, this topic is for a desktop GPU. I just read that FireGL and Quadro have different drivers and are a tad slower then your everyday GPU, but they pump out better quality.

Yes, they pump out better quality. But to be quite honest... I'd think that he should either get a 8800GT board (won't help much. Trust me) OR an ultra-clocked multicore processor... something like a Penryn running at 4GHz - 5GHz, and lots of RAM (will be a TREMENDOUS help), and stick with something that can display 3D just fine... like a GeForce 7xxxx board or an ATI Radeon X19xx board.
