Post Intel copied everything from AMD?!

Check out this article, it's very amusing

Quote:
"If you look at the last five years, if you look at what major innovations have occurred in computing technology, every single one of them came from AMD. Not a single innovation came from Intel," he claimed.

"So I would say that Intel is trying to catch up with us in that respect."

Ruiz accuses Intel of trying to use their market share and production capabilities to squeeze AMD out of the market.

"Intel continues... to abuse their monopoly and that's why around the world governments and regulatory agencies continue to go after them."
To be continued @ Gulfnews: Gritty AMD's chips are still down

Wasn't AMD a synonym of Intel's cheap clone for more of it's early life till the Pentium 2 series anyway? Everyone copies everything from everyone, it's almost a rule in the computing world

too true. i wouldn't laugh too much at intel copying amd though, it is true.

intel have their own version of hyper transport coming out. they are planning to intergrate the memory controller on to the cpu in the next few years...

Getting inspiration from existing stuff is different from expropriating good ideas from their original creators, uncredited. Closer to idea theft, actually

They both try to run the same code.
Truth is Intel was ahead with P1, P2, MMX, SSE, HT...
But old teachings from mr. PhD predicted such stuff even in the 60's.

Its like how bill gates before he made windows, went to steves jobs new company called apple and see how his computer works while jobs didn't really think that Gates was competition and Bill was shown Apples first GUI and stole it and made it his own.

And the other companies like Atari, Commodore, open-source community, IBM, NeXT, Sun, SG and Apple made the Xerox guys rich or what?

I find this quite hilarious. AMD has been using its cross-patent license agreement with Intel to copy their SIMD instructions for years now, and they're criticizing Intel for copying? AMD, who's only created two successful CPU architectures in its entire history (3 if you consider the 29K), is claiming to be the innovator?

Of course, as others have said, copying is the order of the day but the two companies even have a cross-patent license agreement (and AMD clearly uses it more than Intel). Is it alright for AMD to copy stuff that Intel has spent millions of dollars researching and developing but not the other way around?

Plus, many of AMD's own technologies were developed with the help of others. They got their K6 design from NexGen, HyperTransport was developed with the aid of Alpha Processor Inc., and they got their SOI manufacturing technology from IBM.

Indeed. Apple stole it from Xerox and MS stole it from them. I'm old enough to remember that kinda crap.

All that aside, it's just funny how things change. When AMD was on top, their fanclub was laughing at Intel (you know it's true ). But now have Intel essentially pwn them at their own game, and far be it for them to honorably admit defeat and do what Intel did by coming back with something to compete with. I tell ya, the drama meter with chip manufacturers is really amazing sometimes.
