Monitor for PS3

Since i am getting a PS3 next week (probably) i am planning to buy a Monitor with HDMI Output on Christmas. I don´t have enough money to afford a HDTV (HDREADY or FULLHD) so i thought i just gonna buy a monitor with HMDI Output.

And my Question is: Is the quality simmilar to a HDREADY TV when i use this ALTERNATE. Hardware - Software - Entertainment
Monitor or is it even better because the resultion is higher than a standart HDREADY TV.
Or do the 16:10 instead of the 16:9 make problems?

Thank you for your time.

EDIT: I also don´t know what it is with HDCP? Do i need that?

If you buying a monitor for games in HD go for a 24 inch monitor or higher for the 1080p resolution.

1680x1050 is a bad resolution for HD, HD movies don't look to great on my 20 inch monitor.

Don't go 16:10, 16:9 is far better in almost every aspect and is the basic standard for HD.

You sound like your cash strapped so don't go buying any Monster hdmi cables, dvi cables or hdmi-to-dvi adapters. Your paying 80% more for name.
Instead go to monoprice.com and spend $4-$10 on getting one there, instead of the $90-140 all the retail shops sell Monster cable products for.

Most likely the game will scale down to 720p, which IMO still looks damn good.

With 16:10 you will most likely have black bars on the top and bottom so the game can scale to 16:9.

Personally I would save my money for something that could do 1080p for the future, but that monitor should have no problem at all playing games in 720p.

Ok Great thank you. But what has HDCP to do with this. On some Monitors without HDMI Output but with DVI-D there stands 1 with HDCP. But this Monitor doesn´t have HDCP. Does this make any difference?

High-Bandwidth Digital Content Protection, HDCP, is an encryption scheme developed to defend against uncontrolled copying of digital content over high bandwidth digital interconnects such as DVI and the HDMI. The FCC approved HDCP as a "Digital Output Protection Technology" on August 4th, 2004.
A HDCP protected system consists of: 1) HDCP transmitter (DVD player for example), 2) the digital interface (DVI or HDMI), and 3) the HDCP receiver (your display monitor). In brief, the content is encrypted at the transmitter and the signal is passed to the HDCP receiver (display) via the DDC lines (in essence an I2C bus) where it is decrypted before viewing. HDCP requires that both the transmitter and the receiver comply with standards. If either one does not comply, the video will not be displayed properly. Incidentally, HDCP does not apply to analog interface such as component video although component video can be used to display high definition video.

I pulled this from a site because I wasn't sure.

Get a HDCP monitor, just be safe.

You NEED AN HDCP COMPATABLE MONITOR if your ever going to plan on playing blu-ray movies off your ps3. ITS A REQUIREMENT unless you like watching blu-ray without hdcp in which case its then downconverted into 480i quality image, or in most cases no image at all appears just a blank monitor. This is done so people will have a harder time pirating blu-ray dvds.

this isn't really the #1 forum to be asking your questions. Try going to an audio/visual or hardware forum where all the experts on this subject hang out

You'll need a 24" for 1080p content. The problem is that not every monitor supports proper scaling. Avoid the Samsung 245BW at all costs, it does a horrible job at this.

My parents have a 19" Hanss G, I won't recommend it to anyone who is able to detect flaws in a monitor. The 19" is definitely below my standards, the colour aren't uniform on the screen, there's backlight leakage, and it generally has a low image quality. No dead pixels though, and it's a fast monitor.

Edit: if you want a cheap 1080p screen that should perform pretty well, I can recommend this one, the Iiyama. It can either display stuff at 1:1, stretch to full screen, or the best: Stretch while maintaining aspect ratio. It has good colour reproduction for a TN panel as well, and it's the fastest 24" out there.

Thank you all now i know over what I have to be carefull about. I really canīt buy a Monitor for 414€. The highest i could possobly go would be something like 250-275€. Or maybe I could buy this on rates? Hmm that would probably be a good choice so I wonīt need anything else over a long time.

But thank you Cid i really think this is a very good one. I like the though of buying this over rates.
