I just ordered a new graphics card

Newegg.com - ASUS EN8500GT TOP/HTP/256M GeForce 8500GT 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Ready Video Card - Retail is the one I bought . It was cheap , I just want to play oblivion and a few other games . What are your thoughts on this card ? It was all I could afford atm.

I cant help but feel and extra 20 dollars really could have gotten you a better card that would not have completely blown your budget. I don't use newegg but apparently after a rebate they come to the same price, dunno how reliable they are though.
Newegg.com - EVGA 256-P2-N753-TR GeForce 8600GT 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Retail

8600 GT: 32 stream processors
8500 GT: 16 stream processors

Doubling the amount of shaders would have helped quite a lot, I never suggest buying a card just because your currently dont have enough for anything better, its always better to wait for more cash and to buy the better product. My viewpoint anyway.

At anyrate at least you were smart enough to get one with GDDR3 so good choice on that front.

a poor decision....especially if you plan on playing oblivion....

VGA Charts 2007 | Tom's Hardware
....but I guess you can take into account this benchmark uses max quality settings. It might run stable on medium settings

except for a 8800GT, you get what you pay for

It was mainly a present from my mom so I couldnt go any higher , and kirby the 8500 in the graph isnt the same one I got, the one in the graph is ddr2 , but who knows I might get crappy playing on it , may not , but I cant complain.A few people reviews said this card ran great with oblivion at max and My pc is a little better than theres but not much.

Whoever said your 8500 could get to maximum settings at playable framerate is lying. My 8800GTX barely reaches playable fps with everything at maximum. To get maximum in 'grass' settings at playable fps you need at least 640mb of ram on your videocard alone. Even the 512mb 2900XTs aren't able to reach maximum since they don't have enough memory.

Maybe the 8600 will go down a bit by Feb/Mar, the "earliest" I intend to upgrade is Jan/Feb...

Nice card, I'm sure you will able to almost play quake 1 at max settings.

As for oblivion you can send your fps through the roof if you lower 'tree quality' to minimum(i forgot the actual term for the setting). This will turn the 3d trees into 2d sprites, like they were in Daggerfall(1996).
It doesn't look bad either. My sister played oblivion for 5 hours before noticing the quality of trees had gone down. And thats only because I ended up telling her.

My 7600GT ran Oblivion quite... fine at medium settings, so I would expect him to get at least the same performance. Please don't try to discourage people... lol

Oh and Oblivion at highest settings only kill VRAM... but if you reduce grass to about half, the speed boost is really significant, and the quality doesn't go down that much. Who looks for grass that are more than 30 feet away from himself... in a computer monitor?

Because it IS no good... No offense. lol

I am not telling them that their GPUs can bust the 30fps mark in Crysis or something... but with a game like Oblivion, those cards can still yield some... results. Maybe the results won't be as "hardcore" as something your card... (or mine ) can produce but hey, they are at budget price compared to ours.
