Hello, actually this hardware problem about my PS2 disc lens. But I guess the topic of disc lens can apply to other optical disc readers too.
Anyway this is the 2nd time I have to replace my disc lens on the PS2. Why are they so easy to break?? What are ideal ways to protect them. A google search tells me that disc lens are a problem section for Sony when it comes to their PS. Some users can use it for two years with no problem while other like me have replaced two lens in a time space of 6 months. Maybe there is something I did carelessly that I didn't know about? Like pressing the disc in improperly or pressing to hard or pulling the wrong way. Do you think playing high intensity games for 5+ hours can be damaging to the playstation?? Or do these PS2 disc drives just happen to break naturally really fast due to bad design and choice of material by manufacturer?? Any tips to avoiding replacement parts every other month?? Even cars from shady used car salesman last longer.... maybe... |

Pressing the disc improperly or too hard would damage the mechanical part, not the laser itself so forget about it.
One of the reasons is backups in cheap discs. So far the Verbatim are the ones that happen to reflect the laser really really similar to the originals. Games that read all the time in an intense way like GTA. It never stops streaming and is hard on the laser. Badly scratched discs. The harder to read, the more the laser pushes itself to read it. It will wear it down faster than with normal reflection of the laser. What can you do? Use hdadvance and load all you discs in the hard drive plus they load faster. |

load a game to a PS2 harddrive and then run it?? Cool thats news to me, spent most of my time playing PC and missing out the Sony goodies I guess. So I won't have to use my DVD most of the time eh?? Tell me where to buy this "harddrive" thingy. If I can play the game by just loading the data from the DVD drive on PS2 to a PS2 plugin/addon/etc then I won't have to stress the Lens. If the HD breaks I could just plug and unplug without screwing. Am I wrong??

If you have a fat Ps2 get atleast a 40 gb one andan ethernet adaptor in order to use it. If you have a Slim model then you need to use a usb hard drive or a normal drive in a usb case.
The program is called hdadvance. I can't point you exactly where to go since that place contains piracy but the afterdawn forums are a good start. |

Right now my concern is getting a harddrive for many other reasons too of course, it be a waste just for gaming. Anyways I went street to street all day long on weekend and cannot find Sony HDs for PS2. Was told the production stopped for the HDs. But PS2s still in production?? Sounds like a console without a leg, especially when some games need it.
I have an extra 160GB Maxtor USB 1.1 and 2.0 compatible HD. Can I use that or will it be slower than the DVD drive?? But what else can I use as a link between HD and PS2 together for faster speeds?? Is the USB even worth the try?? |
